    Rear spring replacement CRF125

    by Eric-NC » Thu Aug 19, 2021 6:05 pm

    Hello everyone,

My son is crushed we ordered a heavy spring for his 2019 CRF125 and can’t figure out how to disassemble the stock unit. We are thinking it is not serviceable but this site sells the spring.

I noticed a post from 2008 stating there was a clip under the collar. Can't seem to locate it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Basically what you need to do is clamp the shock in a vice , then compress the spring enough so the bottom collar will slide down , then you will see the wire retention snap ring , you use a pick while holding the spring down (2 people make this easier) and pop the snap ring off and the collar will slide down , then release the tension on the spring and remove it , the install is basically the reverse of that

If you have a press (like the Harbor Freight ones) , they usually come with blocks that have indents in them like the one in the picture , you put 2 together and the indents act as a spring retainer (depending on the way you face the blocks determines the size of the indents , basically half circles on each , so you can fit them to the spring size) , so you can compress it , so you could try that if you have one ...

So it seems the bike is a 2018 not 19 so that may make a difference.

I have pulled down the spring to see the grove the bottom cup part fits into. The collar is solid and has no clip to remove. I noticed the bottom clevis (mounting fork part) does have a pressed nut into it but they pressed a triangle into the bottom of the shock stud. This prohibits me from taking off the clevis.

Does anyone have anything to add? Think we are stuck. ☹️

I wish it was like that it would be cake! Seems we need to sell this bike as we are finding many modified parts are for 110s. We run 250s on Sundays this bike is for putting around.

Thanks all for your input. We are going to put it back together and run stock.

No problem , sorry I was unable to get you sorted out , I rarely ever mess with the smaller bikes , so not much I have done on the suspension with them ... Big bikes I have done most every bike manufacturer/model , right up to Harleys , but little call for suspension on the smaller bikes , usually BBR is about the only ones who really mess with them much ... due to the lack of adjustments and options for them ..which is why I don't really mess with them .... so yea , a bigger bike will give you lots more options and adjustability to dial in for a riders needs ... :|
