I really dont want to buy another brand, mor an older moodel 2 stroke as we want reliable dessert bike?
anyone pass on some info before I spend the 5K?

More of a race bike than a trail bike so things to consider
Size of fuel tank, you did say desert
Gearing, easy to change for higher speed of desert riding.
Do they have a kick stand

It is going to have more go which I am sure your son will enjoy.
As it is a more highly tuned bike more maintenance will ensue.
Oil has always been cheaper than engines so I don't see that as a big issue.

My son was 12 when he first rode a 250R, I just didn't buy one.Ended up with KTM200 EXC which was probably faster after getting jetting sorted.

Read through the 150R part of the forums for any issues other may have had.

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

The CRF150R is a pretty different beast than the 125F it's a bigger gap than the displacement would indicate.

The performance and power are essentially 85cc 2-stroke levels if that tells you anything.

The seat height is a significant bump from (29.1/30.9) to (32.8/34.1).

The bike tho actually slightly lighter than the 125F will be harder to pick up if dropped due to a higher center of mass.

I will say though that's it's a blast and has no shortage of torque or power and can/will get you in real trouble if not respected.
