    2012 Hard to start

by Dan Diego » Thu Apr 30, 2020 2:20 pm

The problem seemed to come on suddenly. The bike started fine one weekend. The next ride one month later, it was very hard to start when cold. I was able to bump start it when it was cold and could then refire while it was warm, but even then it was obvious it took more and better kicks to fire it up. When running, the bike seems to be fine but I am just the mechanic, not the regular rider. I inspected valves and found it was time for a valve job. Both Intake valves were out of tolerance, one @ .000". I replaced the intake valves with Stainless, cleaned up, ground seats, shimmed properly, and reassembled. So bummed to try and start today to find it still hard to start. I assumed valve job would fix. Onward. I do not believe the fuel filter on the fuel pump has been changed so that is my next focus. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

No blinking lights. I can bump start the bike and it runs fine. After I shut it off, then for the next several minutes, I can use the kick start successfully. After about 15 minutes or longer, no such luck. When cold, I kicked the bike 10+ times and then quickly pulled the plug. There was not a hint of gas on the plug so I am focused on fuel delivery. Worth noting, when I bump start the bike, I dump the clutch for a second or two it will not fire but then I roll the throttle, the bike fires right up and runs well. I cleaned the fuel pump removed the fuel filter but the symptoms remained the same. I've taken apart the throttle body and in the process of cleaning it and all of the electrical connections and inspecting the wiring. I am going to check the rectifier, condenser, injector, and remaining ignition tomorrow.

I would focus on the fuel pump first , they can be problematic at times .... Do you have a Factory Service Manual so you can test the output of the pump ?? , I would also check the MAP sensor , as that can alter fuel delivery if it is bad ....... I do not have a Service Manual for a 12 (just a Owners Manual which does not show direct tests , but does show disassembly of the pump/filter) , but I do have a Factory Service Manual for a 09-11 on PDF , which should be the same as far as fuel system .... , if you need I can post pics of the pages from the manual to do the tests on whatever component you are concerned with ...

I have a pdf of service manual. I will test the fuel pump for volume transfer and also pressure. I do not have an HDS diag tool that the service manual references so I am not sure how I will check the map but can clean connections.

Not sure if you figured it out yet, my son's bike was the same way. Sounds like valve shims to me. It would progressively get worse so we would shim the valves. Last time we did this, he made maybe an hour and the bike would not start. Ended up having to put in new intake valves.
Not sure if that is the actual problem but perhaps something to look at.
    My son's bike is a 2014 cfr250r
