    Identifying 14 crf250r fork springs

    by bobzers » Thu Mar 05, 2020 3:26 pm

Hi i recently purchased a 2014 crf250r, it came with 2 extra sets of fork springs and i have been trying to figure out what the springs weights are, using one of these spring weight calculators but find it hard to get a consistent accurate reading of the spring dimensions.

Both spring sets are the same height and very close to the same dimensions

one set of the springs coils seems to be slightly looser wound, has numbers printed on the side coils looks to be 280542 1 and possibly 48 on the next lower coil, it has a duller finish and weighs lesser than the other set at 510grams.

The other spring set has no printed numbers or marks on top of the coil, it seems to be slightly tighter wound having maybe half an extra coil winding, it has amore shinier finish to the metal and weighs heavier at 527grams. Could this spring be the standard 46 spring?

The spring set i pulled out of the bike is printed clearly with number and a 50 on the coil below those numbers.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

I would suspect from the last number that it is a 0.48 kg , the 0.50 , is clearly marked and "usually" but not always , a spring that does not have any numbers/writing on it and does not have any scribe marks (notches cut across the top face of the spring) are usually stock rate

So I would guess (without knowing the brand of the springs) that the numbers you gave are the rates , but if the blank one was a stock spring , I would think it would be a smaller diameter than either of the other 2 ......... let me do some measuring on the springs I have (0.46 , 0.47 , 0.48 , 0.49 , 0.50 , 0.52) and see what I come up with , I will try and get back with all the measurements tonight .......

Then we can see if my measurements match anything you have come up with ..... , and that should get you in the ballpark .... ;)

OK , I measured a few of them at various points , to get a consistent reading and this is what I got with a digital caliper (mm)

    0.47 ........ 4.95mm
    0.48 ........ 5.06mm
    0.50 ........ 5.17mm
    0.52 ........ 5.20mm

Hopefully that gives you something to work with as far as coil diameter ...... ;)

EDIT: I could not measure my 0.46 spring because it is currently in one of my bikes , but the 0.47 should give you a rough idea if the spring is a 0.46 or lower , it could possibly even be a 0.44

Hi again and thanks for taking to time to check yr springs for me.

I got pretty much measurements for the 50 ( 5.17mm) and 48 ( 5.07mm) both of these seem to be same type of writing printed and same dull metal finish.

The Random shiny springs are strange in that they pretty much exactly same dia as the 48 printed spring this one i measure at 5.06.
only diff is when weighing on kitchen scales its 1grams heavier and has slightly tighter wound coils.

I just going with the shiny one as you said stock springs shouldn't have any markings on it.

    Again thanks for your time

No problem ..... and yea , the issue is , when springs are not labeled it is really hard to distinguish what rate they actually are as the deciding factors can be very close to each other , the weight can play a factor as to the stiffness of the steel itself and how stiff it is , but generally the rate is determined by the diameter of the spring wire .............. but usually , if it is the same size diameter , it is the same rate .....
