    Battery and general Maintenance Help

    by CRF450X06 » Fri May 25, 2018 10:40 am

    Hi guys,

maybe some of you can help me out. I have a 2006 CRF450X Supermoto that has been sitting in the shed for about 6-7 years, shame I know.

Last week I said no more, I pulled it out and decided it was time she run again.

Of course the battery was dead, but also it got me thinking: could the bike run if I completely took the battery out and just put some electric tape on the positive and negative wire? Or will I damage some components?

I am probably only going to use the bike like one or twice a year and pulling the battery out, carrying it with me, trickle charge/charge it once a month, and check it every so often just to have it live 5ish years seems like a big pain in the rear.

Can the bike run without it? Or do I need to make some modifications to the electrical wiring?

Also I am getting ready to do some maintenance to the poor bike, seems only fair to her. Here is what I am thinking:

    -Carburator cleaning
    -Fuel tank filter cleaning
    -Air filter check cleaning/replacement
    -Spark plug check/replacement

What else do you suggest I do?

Piston, crankshaft and clutch have all been redone just about 20hours before the bike was abandoned, I am not sure about the valves but I think some work was done to them as well.

That's all I can think of.

    Thank you!

here is the wiring diagram for those who can tell whether the battery is safe to pull out during engine operation :D :D :D :D

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

It should run without the battery , you just won't have the obvious E-Start , and possibly not enough to run the headlight (the tail light should be fine , but i believe the headlight would draw too much for the lighting coil by itself , but don't quote me on that , as i have never tried to see if the light will work without the battery in place , but the bike itself should run just like the R does without a battery .......

As far as wires , yes i would cover the terminal ends so they do not short on anything , other than that you should be fine , you could always follow the main battery wire to the Starter Relay and unbolt it , so there is no chance of it contacting anything , then just replace it when you decide to replace the battery ....

Everything else you checked should be sufficient , with the exception of the valves , i would check them as well , this will ensure everything is ready to go

    Hi Jim,

thanks so much for your answer, it is very much appreciated.

About the the headlight it is not a problem as I was planning on removing it for good.

Regarding the valves to be honest I have never worked on them before so that might be a little tricky for me right now.

When saying check them what do you mean? Just check clearance with a feeler gauge or check the ability of the head to stay pressurized with a pressure gauge? Or are there other ways to check for a valve to be in good working condition? :P :P :P

    Thanks again,

    dave

    By the way awesome website you've got going on here =DD =DD =DD =DD :D :D :D :D
