Electrics problem - HELP NEEDED ASAP

    by Jonah.Mergard » Mon May 09, 2016 6:47 pm

    Hey guys,
Been having some electrical problems with my '05 CRF250X. Electric start works fine, but there is no way to stop bike other than stalling it. Once started, you can have the killswitch off, and key out, and it still won't stop unless stalled. However, to start the bike, the key must be in and turned on, but the killswitch can be in any position. Also, the battery will lose charge over time, even when key is off. I THINK is it this small plug that goes into a socket, and is stowed under the headlight that has fallen out. If anyone has pictures of an '05CRF250x electrics under headlight, it would be much appreciated :D Ill take all the help i can get
    Sorry for the paragraph

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

It sounds like you have a bad ground somewhere in the ignition system , also possibly a bad relay since it seems to reset itself once its off , and it needs everything on to start so that might mean a relay is failing , but the battery drain could be a separate issue , for the battery to drain it has to have a direct current draw or a short to ground , possibly in the ignition switch since it does not seem to matter if its on or off when trying to kill the engine , i am not sure how the Oz bikes are wired from the ignition switch to the kill switch , but it sounds like that part of the issue is within the key and kill switch

Check the ground wire that goes to the engine , its located just next to the clutch actuator , its possible its in the connector , but loose from raising the subframe for servicing , you also need to do a test on the stator , to make sure the bike is charging

Not sure if any of this is your issue , but that is where i would start troubleshooting

Thanks heaps, at this stage i'm guessing the relay. I talked to a bike mechanic, and he said try the relay, however he wasn't 100% sure, and they're like 50 bucks here in Aus. I'm just a kid who doesn't want to spend that unless i know that it is the problem.

Do you have a Service Manual on it ?? (a Factory Honda Service Manual) , it will have all the specs that the electrical system has (obviously Aus bikes are completely different than U.S. bikes , IE: ours do not have ignition switches , etc) , you will also need a Multi meter , weather borrowed or whatever you can get , and a Peak Voltage Adapter (they are about $20-$40 on eBay) , diagnosing electrical issues is going to be a issue because of the differences of the ones here in the states

You may try to PM (Private Message) , Ray (Aussiecrf230) as he lives in Brisbane and he is pretty good with troubleshooting and would know more of what the Aus bikes spec out to

Is that Ray from Pro Honda? Pretty sure I already talked to him. He is mostly sure its the relay. My dad is heading over sometime in the next week to find out for sure what part it is
Thanks all for the help so far

No not that Ray, but I know Ray from Pro Honda when they were in the old shop decades ago. That old back room had a great collection of bits for old or strange bikes.

What part of Brisbane are you in Northside or Southside?

Sounds like you need to confirm if the kill switch is working and actually still wired to do its job of actually stopping the bike.
Not having a working kill switch is quite dangerous especially when the bike is laying on top of you after an off.

How old is the battery and what brand?

    Hey,

I have 2 killswitches, both don't change much at all, unless it is a freak incident where the same problem has occurred in both. I have pictures of where i think the problem is, but i am not really sure how to upload to a forum like this. I could email them to anyone who is interested.

I had the same issue you describe after dropping the bike onto a rock. The rock/boulder hit just above the headlight and I could no longer shut the bike off with my key(no kill switch on my bike). One of the wires behind the headlight got pinched/cut. Fixed the wire and it fixed my problem.
Check your wiring harness for a cut wire.

That's really difficult for me; most blinker/brakelight wires have been cut, so there's 6 or so loose wires. Would you by any chance know which wire it is?

I don't recall which wires it was as my stock harness is modified. If you have a wiring diagram, it may be good to trace down all those cut wires to know what they are for. One of those may need to be connected back together.
