    Racing RPMs

    by hazard88 » Wed Apr 16, 2014 2:59 pm

Just bought an 05 as a wife bike. Been sitting for a 1.5 years. Decided to drain the gas from the tank to get fresh fuel, put in new air filter, New needle (the power up sold on this site), New Main #135, New pilot #45, new fuel screw (made sure the o-ring, washer and spring were installed in proper order). At idle the RPMs are racing, quick blip of throttle it will drop and then die.

Could this be a sticky throttle valve? Seems to move freely. Possibly sticky float needle? Doesn't look to be sticking and no fuel draining out. Ran and idled ok before I made changes just a bit rough.

Not sure what else I can look at here. Suggestions?

Nevermind. I think it is the float needle. While it the RPMs were racing I tapped the bowl a few times with a screwdriver and the idle came down everything time.

Check to make sure the cable is not in a bind. Engine off - blip the throttle as you turn the bars lock-to lock.
Make sure you can hear the slide droppng down to idle position. It's very easy to get a bind on the cable after working on the carb.

Very good point. I took the carb off to check the float needle and try to clean it up a bit while waiting on the new one. I noticed the throttle valve seemed to be sticking a bit. Do these things wear in some way. Are there any orientation things I need to be aware of? Seems like it can only go in one way.

I do see the set screw on the linkage arm doesn't look to be the standard screw. I can't get it to seat on the washer, if I do tighten it then the slide really begins sticking.
