    450 oil tips

by think red » Tue Nov 08, 2011 2:49 pm

I just bought an 08 CRF450R and im confused on oil types. Ive always ran motor oil on motor side and trans oil on trans side, but i got the factory manual and it recommends motor oil on both. Any suggestions would be great

    thanx,

You can use engine oil in both but not with molybdenum for the tranny, not good for the clutch. The Honda HP Trans oil is good stuff for the tranny and has a tapered end cap for easy filling.

in our crf's we are using rotella t synthetic on the engine side and delo400 on the trans side. keep the oil clean, at level and a clean filter and your motor will thank you.

Not sure what oil in my motor and tranny

    by HerbanSociety » Tue Mar 12, 2013 5:20 am

I just picked up another crf450x an 05 and I'm not sure if the previous owner used synthetic in the motor side, and I have no way of finding out. I have an 06 that I've been running rotella t (non synthetic) in both tranny and motor with no issues and I've been wanting to do the same to my 05. would it be safe to do so? I've heard that it's not good to go back if you've been using synthetic..

it depends some synthetics are not backwards compatable meaning you can not switch back and forth between oils. if your worried on what the previous owner ran as far as synthetic or non sythetic oil you could always use an engine/transmission flush prior to changing your oil. Then add the oil of your choice. I Run AMSOIL 10w-40 advanced synthetic motorcycle oil in both my engine and transmission, and have been happy with the perfomance of it. it's formulated to be both backwards compatible as well as compatible with conventional oils, but keep in mind if you mix the oil it can reduce the oils life and performace. also as far as running motorcycle oil in the transmission, you can do so as long as the oil you are using is formulated for clutch applications.

Hi all. I am new at Honda dirt bikes. And I will change oil for the first time. From what I have seen and read, I have to use 10/40 synthetic motorcycle oil for both engine and transmission, regardless of any trademark. Am I wrong? Safe Rides

You are fine to do as you described, but...

Using synthetic in the transmission side is unnecesary. Do whatever makes you feel good.

Rekluse, the clutch company, recommends Rotella 15-40 non synthetic in the clutch side, and it is really cheap. The clutch just needs something slippery.

Although it is recommended not to use super slippery stuff in the clutch, I know people that have done it year after year, bike after bike, and could never tell.

Almost all oil is good. We over-analyze.

Thanks for your interest in my questions.
Have been using synthetic oil on my F650GS and have never had any issues with the clutch though BMW also recommend non synthetic. To keep money, I could move to a cheaper one for transmission oil.

10w-40 is the most common oil weight ran, but check your manual and see what it recommondeds. You dont necessarily have to run synthetic motorcycle oil unless it specifically specifies to do so in your manual; however, Synthetic oils are definetly better than conventional oils because they perfom better in high temps and generally have a longer lifespan. I personally run the same oil in both my engine and tranny side mainly so its easier on maintanence, i can cut down weight in my gear bag and trail pack, and its cheaper in my opinion because i only need one oil instead of having to have a motorcycle oil and gear oil.
