    Throttle Cable Adjustment

by Freddie Boi » Wed Jan 26, 2011 4:43 am

Hi, the throttle on my bike does not close on its own when released from WOT position, what is the best way of adjusting the twin cables. Do I start at the carb end first?

    Thanks for your help.

Real common problem with the dual cable set up. Before you start doing anyting, shut the fuel off and start the bike so you can run the fuel out of the carb so when you're working with it, you're not flooding the engine full of fuel. Pull the housing off around the throttle tube and make sure that the cables and throttle tube are free and clean of dirt and debris. Some guys lube the throttle tube and housing, but I don't recommend doing that, it attracts dirt. Then go down to the carb where the cables enter the carb. Remove the plastic cover and clean the crap out of there with some brake or carb cleaner and blow it all out with compressed air. Once you know everything is clean and free, check the cables for and kinks. Once everything is checked out, see how the throttle feels. If it's still binding, use the adjustment on the throttle housing first. What I've noticed is that a lot of folks don't like the bit of play in the throttle and they adjust it out. There has to be some amount of play in the throttle or it will bind and not return properly. If adjusting the cables does not fix the problem, the cables are probably shot and need replaced. I do it about once a year just to be on the safe side. I also add an aluminum bearing operated throttle tube. Excellent upgrade and you can get one off this site.
