Here's a pic from an 08 450R I recently built. If the idler gear is in backwards, it would drag against the case.

similar question for ya agent. I have the same bike and I am rebuilding the water pump, which was a breeze thanks to your how to!! Anyways, I was feeling for play in the exposed gears due to a pesky noise I have been hearing. Is the idle gear that you guys are talking about supposed to have any play? Mine is tight when turned the way it rotates but if I pull the gear towards the clutch it has quite a bit of free play

They shouldn't have a alot of play. That idler gear has a bushing it rides on. That might be worn.

Not sure how much play is "alot" but it has noticably more play than any other gear on this side of the motor. I ordered a new bushing today so we shall see. The noise is kind of a "whirling" sound as the motor comes back down to idle in nuetral or with the clutch pulled. You think this could be the problem?
