How can I tell what year my engine is?

We have a Quad that is fitted with a CRF 450 engine. Part of the connecting rod has decided to pay a visit to the gearbox so I need a new set of cases, crank, piston, cylinder and miscelanious parts. How can I identify what year the engine is. The bottom engine mount is the wider variety so it is probably an 04? 05 or 06 model. The engine number is 2208127 but we clearly do not have the original frame number. I understand there may be difficulty in trying to order a LHS crankcase as we do not have the original VIN number. If this is the case we have an 07 engine that does have a VIN number. Could my parts be built into a set of 07 crankcases. Just what is the difference between the 04 05 06 07 crankcases?

    Welcome to the site!

    Your engine is an '04.

You shouldn't have any issues getting the LHS case. You can order all OEM parts right through CRF'sONLY.

email ken at crfsonly dot com and he can get you anything you need.

Thanks ~. I assume you can tell from the engine number. Is there a way to tell from the number which year the engine is or do you just have to look it up? I have been offered a set of cases from an 06, Would these be suitable? Is there a simple way to identify which year an engine is? We previously raced a Laeger Banshee and all engine parts from all 27 years of production were interchangeable. I just can't get my head round how so many crf parts are unique to each year. We are based in the uk and parts are an extortionate price here. ie Cases $585 each half, crankshaft $750. We have already contacted a supplier in US and they said they could not supply as we did not have the necessary VIN number and we are not based in US. I will contact Ken as you suggest. Thanks for your help

The engine number has no embedded code for figuring out the year or plant.

All years were built at the Kumamoto factory except late 2005's which were built in Hamamatsu.

      2002 - 2000001-2099999
      2003 - 2100001-2199999
      2004 - 2200001-2299999
      2005 - 2300001-2399999
      2006 - 2400001-2499999
      2007 - 2500001-2529999
      2008 - 2600001-2629999

The cases all have different part numbers so they must have some changes, hard to say what they are. Honda does what it can to keep you from using used parts from other years and keep you coming back to them for parts.

I'm sure Ken can get you the parts at a MUCH better price and he ships to the UK all the time.

OK it seems Honda will not supply a left hand case without a VIN no. The fact we are not in the US may also be a problem. So im looking at getting a set of second hand cases, so my question is can I use a set of 05, 06, or 07 cases and build my 04 parts into them. I know that there are differences in the width of the engine mounts in some years but it would be nice to have an engine that is interchangeable with my other engine which is an 07.
