    Chain Seems Too Long on Renthal 428 Final Drive Conversion

    Has anyone done this upgrade to the final drive?

    When I have the sprockets and new chain in place I have to pull the rear wheel completely back to get it anywhere near what it would have to be to proper adjustment. Seems really strange to me.

    I have done the 428 conversion using Sidewinder sprockets on my 03 and I had to remove 2 links in the chain to get the correct length I needed. I am assuming that the manufacturer sent the chain long just to make sure that there was enough to make it work. You can always take links out. Just be careful about taking to many out.

    Your welcome, Let me know what you think of the 428 conversion after you get it installed and ride it. Some people will tell you that it is a waste of money, but I have enjoyed mine so far. Been running it for almost a year now.

    Is your chain a non o-ring like this Renthal R1 in this kit?

    And if so, how does it handle the trails, mud, dirt, etc?

    I would assume you just need to keep these non o-ring chains pretty clean and lubricated, and then they will perform well.

    I am pretty sure it is an O-Ring chain that came with my conversion kit. I also use the synthetic "SS-51" lube that they recommend for their chains. When I clean the chain, I just use hot soapy water and a nylon brush, does the trick every time. I haven't had any problems with the chain or the sprockets, other than some normal stretching of the chain. Keep it clean and lubed and you should be in good shape.

    Thanks for the feedback,

    We're riding next week in the mountains in Lake County California. We normally ride about 50 miles in steep, rough terrain along with tight tree lines trails.

    I will let you know how the 428 Renthal kit performs under pressure on the trails and see if I notice a difference.
