    07 CRF250R wont kickstart

    by sven707 » Wed Jan 02, 2008 9:03 pm

    I bought a used 07 CRF250R that wont start. I can start it by pulling it behind a quad and it will start when the engine gets around 4000-5000 RPM. If I try to let the bike idle down, it just dies and wont kickstart. Even if I adjust the idle way up so that it will stay running, it wont kickstart after I shut it off. I don't really know where to start eliminating possible causes. I am pretty sure they don't allow quads and tow straps on the starting line, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'll check the pilot, and do you mean valve clearences or should I also look for something else. To look at the bike, it only appears to have been ridden 2-3 times (no wear on engine cases or frame, original tires and grips) so I was kind of hoping it wouldn't be anything major. It will be a good learning experience for me. Thanks.

    Yes. Valve clearances.

    One of the symptoms of a closed intake valve is hard starting. Only able to be bump started.

    I just checked the valves,
    Intake = .005" or .127mm
    Exhaust = .015" or .381mm
    I think intake was actually in spec and exhaust has too much clearance. I am on my way to the store for a new shim kit (I can't find mine!). I went the valve route first because I wanted to check them any way. I will check carb/jets tonight.

    Still no start.

    Valve adjust went as it should, as described. Punch mark on gear lined up, 2 marks on cam gear level, lobes pointing back and all valves are now in spec.

    Carb was/is clean and stock, but I put a new 42 (stock) pilot in just to make sure.

    I can hear the hot start action opening and closing properly (if thats possible) I adjusted the idle till the slide went all the way down to its lowest position (which still has a small elliptical opening) and then I raised it back up about 1-2 millimeters.

    I checked for air leaks at boot

    I checked for spark at the brand new plug (just by eye, I don't know how to test or troubleshoot electrical yet)

    Then I kicked forever and no start.

    Yesterday, the new plug that I took out after I bump started it was wet and looked fouled, like a 2 stroke, black and wet.

    I just don't get it, I have had about 10 CRF250Rs and I feel confident in my start procedure. What should I try next?

    Sorry, check the magneto. Even if the plug is firing, it doesnt mean that it gives enough of a charge to start the bike.

    Do you know of a how to on how to check that, and is the magneto the same as a CDI? I am a complete novice at electrical. Thanks
