I personally like to short shift on the trails. If I am on a track, I wind it out more.

as in not giving that much throttle before switching gears? right? so you ride like 2/4 throttle on each gear?

That's it Micah. While I confess I don't pay that much attention to how much I have moved the throttle, I wouldn't guess that it is normally over 1/2 throttle on most trail situations, with the exception of hills perhaps.I actually just shift by "feel". After you get to know your bike, you seem to know what gear and how much throttle to apply for a given situation.

What, you have a tachometer to tell you when to shift?

I'd say it depends on what you're trying to accomplish at that moment. Keep in mind there is a powerband, and if you shift too soon you may place yourself right out of the powerband, and find yourself lugging for a dozen or so yards until the engine catches on and returns once again to the powerband. For example: If you're caught behind a slower rider, it could be a good thing to shift a little earlier, as it reduces the engine-breaking effect 4-strokes have. (so when you lay off the gas, you'll have less tendency to lurch forward over the bars). Then when you're ready to go around, shift down to get back in the powerband and do your thang. Or when you move to the 450R, just twist the throttle. It doesn't care what gear you're in. Kinda nice. ;) ;) ;)
