    SidePanel/NumberPlate Screw Mod

by paul turner » Mon Jun 11, 2007 7:03 pm

The original 4mm screws mounting the sidepanels are too small, and can strip out {with no help}, and actually fall out on the trail/track, as my right screw had done previously. 8mm screws are the correct choice.
Now I swap out the left sidepanel's screw while I have the panel off for the rear fender replacement.
Knock out the aluminum bushing from the reccessed hole, and use a 31/64" drill to open the hole. Install the new bush/washer firmly in the hole. New bush/washer and screw, are the seat mount parts from a crf250r.

Drill out threaded hole in subframe with a 1/4" drill bit, tap new threads with a M8x1.25 thread tap,

Lightly grease, or threadlock new 8mm screw, and mount sidepanel, you will FEEL the diference in screw strength,

Now you are a heads up kinda guy! Great idea for a simple, cheap and totaly functional mod! I like it cause I could get seat -n-side panels off with changing the socket or keeping two rachets in my pocket when working on the bike. Thanks
