Tried something new - why was I so afraid?

I just have to glee for a second... I tried trail riding in the woods at a place near my house for the first time this weekend. I'd been there a few times with the family and always stayed in the kids' riding area with my kids, afraid to go up the 'big' trails. Wasn't sure I would be able to do it and pictured myself walking a mile back down the mountain to ask if hubby could pull bike out of ravine, etc. etc.

Finally did it and I LOVE IT!!! It was very muddy, but the local club had maintained the trails by sinking cement brick into the muddy spots, so there was lots of good traction. I had so much fun, I did the loop twice! The trail was very twisty and mostly steep uphill with switchbacks. I did it first in 1st gear, and the second time in 2nd gear. Yahoo! I talked hubby into going again this weekend if we can get a babysitter.

Anyone else have stories of overcoming fear to do something new (besides just plain straddling a bike)? It helps me feel better when I hear I'm not the only one...

Well, my wife was really excited about riding a couple years ago. We got a 150F and she was doing okay....until...she sent herself into a small revine. She was having problems getting the shifting down. You know...the give it the gas, let off, pull in clutch, shift with foot, let out clutch, give it the gas routine? It just wasn't coming to her. She tried to make a turn and ended up in that ditch. Bruised some ribs and some other general bruising.

I tried and tried to talk her into giving it another go (after she healed of course) but she won't have any of it. She's not against dirtbiking at all...she has just decided it's not for her.

The craziest thing about this is she has no problem jumping out of airplanes with me, but she won't touch a dirtbike. Go figure...

Congrats on beating your fear! It will only get better and better. I'm still working on her. Sometimes even going so low to offer to buy a quad just to get her out there.

That's a great idea, but she's 5' 2" and I'm not sure a lowering link can get it low enough for her. Heck, I'm 6' 1" and when I sat on a [stock] 250X, I was definately on my tip toes. I'll give it some thought...but I have to be honest, I plan on getting me my own Rekluse before anyone else (I know...I'm greedy!) :)
