valve clearances and a valve job

by Ridin Rick » Sun Feb 11, 2007 10:51 am

If my 2004 250R had valve clearances of basically zero on the intake and .013 on the exhaust side, will I likely need to do a valve job? Is there a way to determine the condition of the valves without pulling the head off?

You can do a leakdown test. That will give you an idea of how good the valves are sealing against the seats.

But there are alot of factors. If a leakdown fails, it's not necessarily the valves. If it passes then all should be in good shape.

Yes there is a way of determining if your valves are bad without taking your head off... they go to zero clearance

hey guy. shim your valves. the smallest shim you can get is a 1.20. If you are on a 1.20 you need to invest in a new valve. I have had 450s and 250s and they do the same thing. Once the valves start to go, start saving for new valves. I will get one ride per adjustment until I replace the valve. I would say your valves are probaly fine. Adjust them to where they need to be and ride. Check them more frequently and you will see a trend and will be able to prepare for a valve job.

If your having to adjust your valves after every time you ride, you should prolly replace them now before you suck it into the head. Then your really screwed
