Pit bikes? How cheap is too cheap...

    by teselle391 » Fri Jan 05, 2007 11:11 am

I've seen some of you have purchased these cheap pit bikes, I think I too would benefit from one. Im looking at alum. frames (S-8) would steel be better? Its only $500 so I cant expect much. Pretty much just putzin' but you never know when a road gap will pop-up. Anyone wish they would've taken the plunge for a track worthy edition as opposed to the poor mans?

I think Smash paid more than twice that for his. If it's in the 500.00 range, you can almost guarantee that it will break within the first couple of rides. Didn't want to be a downer, but in this case, you get what you pay for.

The one I got was about $800 and it's still had a few problems. Had to replace the chain and bars so far. Seems like I have to tighten up a lot of stuff too, guess the 5 year olds they get to put these things together aren't strong enough to torque a bolt yet.

If your gonna put it'll probably work, abuse it or ride it hard like a honda and none of them will hold up. I got a steel one so I can break out the Mig welder if it ever breaks.

I had a SIKK TOYS 125mx pitbike and sold it after a year. It was definately one of the more pricey ones at $1400 and then with my neverending obsession with modding everything I own I had alot more in it.. It was fun... But I had several problems with it as well... The main one was the transmission would slip out of gear.. and when I contacted them they told me they would actually give me a new motor since it was a known issue.. But for 6months straight I was given this BS lines about there engine are sitting on a dock ina container and the US CUstoms won't let us get them.. It's pretty interesting how that is and they are still selling bikes and the SiK mountain bike even.... Hmmmm Needless to say I sold the bike and don't plan on wasting my money on another one of them again..

If I was to buy a pitbike I would go with a CRF50 there all green sticker.. the parts made for them actually fit them(THERE"S soooo many parts that were supposed to fit my pitbike that of course after I bought n Ebay with no return policy of course didn't fit and I took a bath on the purchase..) Eventually I'll get a crf50 and do a bigbore kit on it and upgrade to disc brakes... My buddy recently got one and it's 100x better quality than the SIK mx bike was.... and the SIK bike is one of the nicer bikes...

My only exception to the crf50 would be to buy a PITSter Pro. with a twinspar frame 125cc motor, oil cooler, green sticker(I think they even have a good warranty and actually honor it too=)

I'll tell you how it does tomorrow. I was just "informed" by a friend that I've been signed up for a couple of days to race the Veteran pit bike class at Raceway 395 tomorrow night.

Ok, so we raced them tonight and have another part to add to the carnage. Rear shock is bent on one of them now.

I didn't do to bad, finished 2nd out of 5. There's four more races in the series so I might just try and finish this thing out.

The suspension was horrible, it bottomed on every landing and my wrists and ankles are killing me right now. So I have to upgrade those (the suspension, unless you know of a wrist and ankle upgrade). Power wise it seemed well under control. If I get some suspension I just might end up with a trophy!!!

We bought one to play around on in the snow. I can see the bars and chain going first. The model w/the twin spar frame has a swing-link so Im thinking this might be a descent $50 upgrade as opposed to single pivot of the steel frame.

An eXtreme was reviewed in Mini Rider. They said the bars and/or the bar mounts bent very easily.

Another option is a CRF70 or a KLX110. Both have oodles of mods out. You can get the 70 up to 107cc's last I checked. Maybe more. The 110 has 143cc kits.

Clutch kits are out there for both, but I only know of a trans mod to add 4th gear to the 110. No 4th gear kits for the CRF70 as far as I know.

my friend is a dealer for these and everyone we know has one. we play around on these all the time and haven't had much problems. he sells them to me for 450.00. anyone interested, let me know. you can come ride mine and check it out. the red ones are as close to honda red as i've seen. these bikes are 125cc with a 1 down 3 up and a clutch. front and rear disc brakes. seat height is almost 32" tall. 14" front and 12" rear. in my opinion, they are well worth the money. they just keep running and running.

Yup they run a 5 race series there all year round. Actually it was no where near as exciting for everyone to watch as they were hoping. I'm gonna miss the next race, but I'll be at the next one in February. And then the killer day... Adelanto in the morning and mini racing at night... That should be exciting, last year I could barely walk after adelanto.
