Nice write up. Piston is going in tonight per Turners instructions, that way if it blows up I can send him the bill!

Don't you buy a bike every year? Why a new piston and valves?

PT, instructions were great and almost fool proof. You never mention though that you need to make sure not to put the piston in the sleeve upside down. Or maybe you don't and I'm just an idiot...

My riding is almost non-existent nowadays. There's just no time. It seems work and family life have caught up to me. That, or I'm somehow paying my dues for the years I spent every weekend on a bike.

Maybe you need to get rid of one of the three things. Work and riding are necessities. Just saying...

do you use a scotch bright pad on the inside of the cylinder and wash with soapy water before you reassemble the cylinder or just measure the ring gaps and not do anything to the cylinder at all.

Hey Paul, no mention of replacing the cam chain when you did the piston. Was it just not something to show how to do or wasn't part of your refresher?

Ya know, its more involved to change the cam chain. I've changed 2 cam chains now, one being Pat's, and you know the high mileage that bike has. Comparing the old chains and new chains side by side for visual stretch, there was none.
What I recommend is, if funds are available, and you're doing a major top-end job, then pop for the chain, gasket and flywheel puller and do it.
I have a feel for these chains via what I see in counted turns with the tensioner on numerous top-end jobs, in other words, I haven't met with a stretched chain yet to see/feel the tensioner drive all the way home. These OEM chains are pretty good stuff.
