I have not regeared, but was really struggling in the sand washes when my bike was stock. Since I did the airbox and jetting mods, I am tearing through the washes now, and I suck in the sand. I am hoping a Scott's and suspension will help even more.

Do you ride just in the OHV park (around the dry lake bed) in Johnson Valley, or do you venture out on some of the roads to Giant Rock and places near Old Woman Springs Road? I hear there is some major cracking down going out there. A new Ranger was added who lives in the area. Groups over 10 need a permit on the roads. It's good and bad. I liked the laid back atmosphere, but too many people doing anything they want are ruining it for all of us...but that's another topic.

I have a buddy that owns five acres just off of Joshua Tree and Starlight. I ride some sand wash and technical stuff west of Quail Bush. I also do quite a bit on the other side of 247, way out past Means...past the copper mine etc. I've done all the normal mods. The bike pulls 5th gear easily through the sand. I need some more speed, and a little more out of third gear.

PS Have you ever ridden the sand wash that zigzags? The one you can ride up the walls on? It's a blast.

I'v been up many, many like that.

I don't know my way around the area very well yet--I've only been out there four times, but I really like it out there. There is a great variety of riding. Are they many of those types of washes in that area, or was your comment a general one? Thanks.

Just a general comment, I do however love to blast down sand washes, it's a nice break from whooped out 2 track. Sand washes, canyonns and singletrack ridgelines are my favorite stuff to ride.

I also love exploring canyons and most of the time when you in a canyon your in a riverbed or wash (rocks and sand)

I try to work in some sand washes whenever I go out...and just find new ones and ride them until they box in or terminate on a ridge or elsewhere, I have found some insane trails that way, maybe someday i'll show ya'll some more of my good stuff.

I don't think I have ridden that. There is one wash in particular that has been a thorn in my side that goes from the main dry lake bed (where everyone camps) and it goes to my brothers place, which is on Ghost Road, toward 247. I recall getting it down on my YZ426 after a couple of rides, but when I traded to a street legal DRZ, I was struggling again. The X will clearly tear through it. It's just practice, confidence and having the bike set up properly. I can't wait to order a Scotts and see how that helps. I should order it finally next week. Was waiting to see how bad the holiday's tapped me out.

    DD,
Is that March date you referred to an organized, planned ride, or something you are just throwing out there? My schedule is hard to plan for anything, but I would like to pencil that one in.

I prefer running 14/51 for A couple of reasons.
General rule of thumb is that one tooth on the front is equal to three on the rear and is cheaper then spending alot of money on A rear sprocket, then if your not satisfied your only out $20+ instead of $65+.BTW I have plenty of lowend grunt and it smooths out the intire powerband with plenty of topend.

But its all about what fits YOU and your riding style.

14/51 and 13/49 are neck and neck. I'm going to buy myself a 14 tomorrow and try it out in a few weeks.
