    Oil filter cover torque

    by newbtocfr » Fri Jul 30, 2021 7:28 am

The service manual I have does not list the torque specs for the oil filter housing, it only states to "tighten" it which is quite wauge.

It 90 in/lbs is a good torque for those bolts like similar bolts on some other bikes?
Install the oil filter spring [3] into the oil filter cover [4].
Install a new gasket [5] and oil filter cover.
Install the cover bolts and tighten them.
Fill the engine with the recommended engine

They are 6x25mm bolts , so the torque should be what it shows for 6mm bolts with flange ... This was taken from the Owners Manual

Use caution - those are known to be a weak spot and many snap the bolts. Even when using a torque wrench many have snapped them of, then come running here for help. It is O-ring sealed so very little torque is required.
Snug it up and call it good.

And as engineers will tell you tighten till it strips and back off 2/3 of a turn.
It doesn’t help that it is now stripped but you now know when you should have stopped tightening the bolt.

Personally go with hand snug on bolts into alloy. It stops stripping threads and just as importantly distorting the cover so o’rings and gaskets can’t seal.

I have also been cautioned about using a torque wrench on the oil filter cover bolts of my CRF250L
Hand tighten with a little extra was all that was necessary ...... and I've had not leaks at all

The bolts are really only there to keep the cover from falling off. The O-ring does 100% of the sealing.

That's what they said about the space shuttle.
Luckily bikes don't get that cold.
