    Doc & Set-up Fees?

    by Danacus » Wed May 29, 2019 11:26 am

    Hello all,

I found what I thought was a good deal on a new 2018 (hold-over) CRF250L for $3999. But when I spoke with the sales department, they informed me that the doc and set-up fees were $650. I think that is excessive? I figured there would be an extra $200-$300 for fees like this, but not that much. This is in sales free NH, so this is not taxes.

Is $650 a lot for these fees?

Thanks, and sorry if this is not an appropriate question for this forum. I'm a noob

If those are what they call Document fees as you stated - tell them forget it. Most I have ever paid for "doc" fee's when buying any new bike is $99 and I did not even like that. Taxes, licensing and registration you can't get around but documentation fee's are just the business and sales weenies padding their wallets. ](*,)

I would tell them no chance. Offer the price you want to pay and be prepared to walk. They need to sell that leftover bike more than you need to buy it.

Well it's not just "doc" fees but also "set-up" fees. I suppose this means the fee to uncrate and assemble the bike.

It's up to you but it is still "fluff" that you should not be paying. It comes down to what you want to pay for the bike. If they give you a price and then start adding the "fluff" you are getting taken for a ride. It's just a matter of what you want to pay and how much you want the item. Like I said before - they want to get rid of a left over bike so you are in control of the "fluff" you let them charge.

They explained that Honda charges them $330 on top of the cost of the bike for a freight charge. The dealer then passes this cost onto the buyer along with a charge for their shop to uncrate, assemble/set-up/adjust and test the bike as well as a "document" fee. This is in NH were the state requires them to store records for 7 years.

    I ended up with an "out-the-door" price of $4,500 for a brand-new 2018. I think that's pretty good.

As long as you are good with it that's all that matters.

    Have fun & safe riding.

I am walking into this situation right now. Found a New 2018 CRF250L Rally for $3,885. They are probably going to try to tack on some fees. Guess I need to decide right now what I am comfortable with.

These guys have $120 docs, but a $1200 freight/adm fee.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

What they have to "set up" is put the front tire and handlebars on and maybe hook up the battery and the seat (15-30 minutes tops , so unless they are charging $400 in labor to "setup" the bike , it seems excessive to me) .....then fire it up and send it on it's way , not really much considering the extra cost , Like Neil said , $99 even seems excessive since they are getting the bike at "cost" not the retail price they are charging you , so they are already making a decent profit even after paying the manufacturer fees , if at all ..... , if the bike is $3,885 to you , my guess is they more than likely paid $2,500 for it , the rest is simply , as Neil put it ... Fluff ........... If you have any mechanical skills , just tell them you will take it in the crate , the worst you should have to pay is tax/license , etc. ..... If , I end up getting a new bike in the near future , I am going to the dealer and requesting one in the crate ..... I would rather do everything anyway , to make sure it is done right , as well as save the fee's I would be paying , only then to get it home and tear it apart and grease and torque everything correctly anyway ....

Ya. I ended up walking away from it. The deal was too good to be true.
