    Noisey third gear?

by matt watt » Sat Jun 16, 2007 1:16 pm

I have owned my 04 250x since new and maintained it religiously. Today I noticed a "whop whop" sound in third gear just idling along. Is this normal? Has anyone else noticed this? It only does this in third.

Not sure what you mean. :-k
Does the sound go away as you increase your speed/rpm's in 3rd?

Could it be the sound of lugging the engine? (At that same speed you notice the sound, does it get worse, or even stay the same if you shift into 4th).

It is not the engine lugging sound. It sounds like a rough bearing or chipped gear. I cant hear it on aceleration or higher RPM. It stops as soon as I shift up or down.

When my wife and I had our newest boy, she wouldn't let me name him Anthony Jr because of the show. People used to call me Tony Soprano when the show first came out and she said if we did that, we would never get rid of that nickname. She's only 1/4 Italian, how can she relate 8)

    Hello Matt:
The slapping sound that you are referring to was discussed a couple of years ago and has been mentioned in magazine articles. I am quite sure that it is just drive chain "slap" that is annoying but not harmful to your bike. It wouldn't hurt to check your chain guide roller bearings and chain adjustment.

I would be betting on a bad gear... chain slap would probably be noticed throughout the span of the transmission. I have broken gears (although on different bikes) and was amazed how second was smooth and clean, third sounded like something was eating the tranny, while fourth was back to being as slick as whale poop off an iceberg.

While I am betting on chain slap, look at your oil and see if there are any particles in it.

I also notice alot of noise at times while riding due to chain slap, and usually it goes away when accelerating and seems alot less frequent if I have lubed and adjusted the chain recently. When at a steady cruise at relatively low rpm it is the worst.
