"Best" is surely subjective at a minimum. There are many good ones out there.

I run an FMF Q2 and I chose it over the Pro Circuit 496 which I had a chance to try first. I'm partial to FMF, have always had good results.

I don't have any input on others such as White Bros, Big Gun or Yoshimura, but I've heard good things about all of them.

I asked the same question when I was looking. I choose the White Brothers E2. It performs well, comes with a sparky, is noise legal, and made of one piece so it is very durable.

Have you had to repack your exhaust. I understand the FMF is the only aftermarket pipe you don't have to pack.
    True?
If you have done it how much work is it?

I haven't and don't think I need to at this point in time. It's still pretty quiet. I don't think it's all that much work to repack.
I know with the Two Bros pipes you have to drill out rivets, pull it apart, remove the old packing, wrap the new stuff, put it together and pop rivet it back up.

I guess a better question is why do you want to change your pipe ?

More power ? - can you outride the power you get from a stock pipe ? Unless you are a very good rider I suspect not so IMHO there is no point in changing pipes - what I do recommend to make the engine breathe a bit better is to drill out the stock pipe baffle.

Makes a big difference and unlike after market pipes is still quiet

To all those that have changed from a stock pipe did you "really" notice any difference ? apart from being louder which some equate with more power.....

Topgun, a well designed aftermarket pipe rarely gives very much more hp. What they are good at is shifting the power around a little and perhaps smoothing the delivery a bit. I am with you as far as not bothering with one unless you crush the stock unit, don't need anything else done, or are a class A rider.

I love my Yosh. Full system ti. I also love my buddies CHM but is just below the legal Db level. HE had an FMF but for the cost of the Bomb header he got the full system. As far as packing I have done several times Get the packing remove the old Baffle either drill the rivets (on the tail end of the muffler) or remove allens/screws. cut off the old material wrap new rather tightly around baffle secure with scotch tape and reinstall. When your are removing the old check the diameter and then the diameter of the muffler keep this in mind when you roll the new packing and before you tape. you might notice the sound is slightly less if your old packing is pretty bad you will know its pretty bad if it is basically charcoal when you pull it out wich is why you need to reference its diameter against the muffler housing. I think it is a good Idea to repack about once a year. If you have an exhaust like the CHM that Barely meets levels, and that pleases you repacking may keep you from a costly fine and a quick ejection from your favorite spot. Might lesson the odds you get checked regularly if you avoid being too loud in the first place.

I can't comment on the stock cam, but when I switched to the HotCam stage 1 cam, yes. I was actually disappointed with the HotCam when I had installed it with the stock exhaust. After installing the CHM P-4R exhaust and a rejet, I was very happy with the power delivery of the HotCam. I will admit I'm not happy with the noise output, its loud without the quiet insert.

I think with the stock X cam you are waisting money with an aftermarket exhaust. Drill out the stock baffle if you must and rejet. If you really need an aftermarket exhaust then try the FMF Q4 (if they make it for the 250X yet). That would be my choice if I hadn't already got the CHM.

I see so many people with after market pipes who seem to take great delight in removing whatever baffle system they had and turn a nice quiet bike into a loud annoyance ...

Most of these clowns couldn't ride out of sight on a black bike on a dark night....

MInd you in Oz next year the Noise Limit is down to 94 dB for MX and Enduro so I suspect there will be a down turn in the after market exhaust trade plus a lot of cheap ones !!

MIne is right on 94 dB with baffle drilled

I would also like to comment on Jaws' post great point(man he's full of points ain't he?) my sytem is great and works well with the other mods I have and hopefully better with the new Head when done. But it was the first mod I did to my bike and somewhat of a waste at the time. I spent about $600 (and was a discounted price at the time) wwich could have got me some really cool stuff. like the Scotts Stabalizer or the Rekluse or fully reworked suspension all of wich would do more for me than any motor upgrades all of wich I now wish I had. Keep in mind the best performance upgrades are the ones that will make you a better rider not the ones wich may make your bike harder for you to control. (I have no idea of your skill or experiance just making a general statement)

I just put an FMF Q4 slip on on my 06 250x...Almost as quiet as stock...My head pipe turns red soon after I fire it up...I never noticed it before with the stock pipe. Is this normal?

I changed my pipe... the damn thing didn't make me ride any better.. I have no idea why. It must be broke.

Tbones06CRF250x: That red pipe generally means you are running too lean. If you have stock jetting, you may want to go with a larger pilot and main. The JD jet kit is a good choice. I think it may now include a pilot jet. edit: hmm.. it doesn't seem to include a pilot. I thought I read somewhere that he was going to do that. Anyways... With an opened airbox, aftermarket pipe, at sea-level.. a 42 pilot works great.

Kevin you may have to shove a couple Benji's down it for it to give up the good stuff. three or four should really make you fast.
