    Break in time

by push the button » Sat Jun 09, 2007 1:27 pm

I am buying a new 250x and was wondering what or if there is a break in time?

IF your buying a new bike read and follow the break in procedure in the owners manual, also I think there are a few optional parts and tools listed in the owners manual that you could get, good luck and enjoy

IMHO .... run it quiet for about 100 km's then just go for it ...

Change oil and filter , clean air filter and the little suckers just go ....

My mate has caned his from about the first 30 minutes and its still going strong ...

    Alternative theory ...

    Good read ...

Break it in the same way you intend to ride it. It has had the snot ran out of it already in the factory.

    break in

    by SoCal450R » Mon Jun 11, 2007 11:30 am

See for my 450r it might be different but I was told to ride it normally without holding it at one throttle position, which who does anyways? but as follows

ride for 20 mins. then let it fully cool then 30 min cool and so on to 60 mins and full cool. And then check valves at 10 hours.

I don't think it has been ran at the factory in riding conditions, and you definitly want your valves and rings to seat right. and another thing is you only get one chance to break it in. So do it right!

Stock bike vs stock bike: some just seem to last and perform better than the other. Usually it is the guy who is very timid on his new bike that ends up having problems later on. IMO

I'm in the camp where you ride it like you would normally. The only caveat is that it is properly warmed up before you run it through the gears. A story:

A long time ago when I was much younger and less wise, I was riding with my older cousin and his brother (Karl). Karl has been racing since the 60's and is wise beyond what I know now. Before the weekend, I had heard that he had a brand spanking new CR250R. When you're younger and not in good financial status, nothing sings a song in your head like a brand new bike. They just seemed shinier than they do now...anyway. So we get to our destination and Karl rolls out this super-shiny CR250. I'm drooling at the thought that I may get a chance to even ride this thing. My ratty old RM250 suddenly doesn't even look cool anymore. He starts it and lets it purr for a few minutes. Throws a helmet on and goes down the dirt road we were parked off of... Braaap, braaaaaaap, braaaaaap, braaaaaaaap, braaaaaaaaaaapppp as he rails through all 5 gears. He comes back and I'm like "man, that thing sounds sweet." "Karl? You just got this thing, when did you have time to break it in?"

Karl kinda shaking his head no, says with a blank stare, "I just did."

Look how they break in race engines. 0-200 in seconds. I'm careful because I'm not made of money and not willing to take a change with my new bike.

The way I see it is, if taking the time to break it in (whatever that means to you) makes you feel better, than go for it. There are tons of things that I do that are not very efficient, but that is the way I like to do it.

Just don't take it on a road and ride it topped out in 5th for miles and miles. The normal varying of rpm that off road riding provides makes very good breakin procedure. You can ride it hard, but not WFO all the time. If you are considering going to a synthetic oil, wait for about 200 miles and then make the switch. Gives the rings a better chance to seat in.

Thanks for all the replies. I feel like I have more of a understanding what the break in window is now. I've been told everything fron not to ride it and just let it warm on a stand by just giving a little gas, to break it like you would ride it....hard. So needless to say I'm a little unsure who to listen to. I'm very glad to have found this site and all its members wisdom. Once again thank you all for your info.

At the end of the day, you have to do what is going to make you feel like you did the right thing?!?
