fluid came out of hose when bike laid on side

    by Cliff » Fri Jun 01, 2007 11:57 pm

This is a long post, so bear with me as I am not an engine expert!!!

I laid my bike on its side so I could adjust my Rekluse clutch 'installed gap' for the 2nd time that evening. As I was taking the clutch cover off, I noticed some fluid leaking from the largest diameter vent hose that sticks out under the bike.

Here is the sequence of events that led up to this.
    1. I laid the bike on its side and adjusted the Rekluse installed gap the 1st time.
    2. I put the clutch cover on and added 1000ml of tranny fluid to the tranny. 700ml is the normal amount, but I was told by Rekluse to use 1000ml because I have the oversize clutch cover.
    3. I took the bike out for a quick 3-minute test ride. The installed gap must have been too big, as the clutch was slipping. So I took the big bike in the garage for 2nd adjustment.
    4. I laid the bike on its side again, and saw about 300ml (rough estimate) leak out of that larger diameter hose!

I thought it was tranny fluid, and freaked out because I did not think that that hose connects to the transmission side. The fluid was rather dark, but I think it may have been tranny fluid that got dark from the friction plate particles as a result of the slipping clutch. Or maybe it was engine oil...sh*t, I dont know!

So I drained the tranny fluid and put it in a clear container. I also drained the engine oil and put it in a clear container. When I put them side-by-side, the engine oil was noticeably darker. This made me feel good, as I was worried that the tranny fluid may have entered the crankcase, but the different colors eased my concern.

But when I noticed that the large diameter hose connected to the side of the case on the other side of a gasket that the clutch was on, I got worried again.

So does anybody know if I actually got tranny fluid in the crancase, and mixed with the engine oil?

Thanks from a newbie dirt bike mechanic!

It was a black hose. It has a plastic white T-shaped connector in the middle of it, where one hose branch connects to the right crankcase, and the other end extends up under the gas tank area somewhere.

It won`t mix the oils by laying the bike on it`s side.

Are you sure it wasn`t gas? If you lean a bike over with the pecock on the bowl will fill and the extra gas will run out on the ground.

I believe that is a vent hose one end should go up to the center bolt of the sub frame and connect to nothing another to the crankcase (top) to vent and the third will drain down through the linkage if so it will be small diameter about 3/8 od if you laid the bike on its side long enough it might have cause the fluid loss. in any case I would double check both fluid levels again for contamination and run it check again top off if necessary. do not believe it would be major.

It wasn't gas. it was definitely tranny fluid or oil, and probably was tranny fluid.
I put 20 miles on the bike today, so I will drain and compare both oil and tranny fluid. If they are the same color, then it is not good.
I wish there was an easier way to determine what happened!
Thanks for your help so far and keep the responses coming if you have any ideas!

I think what probably happened was a simple miscommunication. Instead of using 1000ml you should only be adding 100ml extra for a total of 800ml. Hence, the extra tranny oil came out of your breather hose.

Also, if you have a stand you can rest the end of your bars on the stand when you lay the bike over to keep it a little more upright.

Most people on this site put 1000ml or a full bottle in the tranny side. We had another thread regarding how much you should add if you have an oversized cover. 1125ml?
About the hose. If it has a tee in it wouldn't it be the crank case breather? Sounds like the one I changed when I added the after market breather vent.
