    high idle

    by racer105x » Sun May 20, 2007 7:47 pm

came back from a 35 mile loop and on the way back I noticed that the idle would stay high.....when you hold the clutch in it would still have momentum...is it the clutch or valves........or what

Maybe your hot start lever is sticking? Just a thought...

A high idle is indicative of a lean condition. Check things over real well. Make sure your fuel screw hasn't moved. Carb boots are tight, etc.

I had the same problem, I opened the fuel screw a little more and actually turned down the idle and it went by by.

I had exact same problem. Jetting was stock at the time. I rejetted and adjusted the fuel screw and never had the issue again.

Hmmm, I was assuming (you know what you get when you do that!) that his machine had been performing OK previously. IF you haven't jetted, etc, then that is exactly what you will need to do, as mentioned above.

Yup, had same problem as well with stock setup. Can remember the rpm's would also fall back down slower than they should after blipping the throttle. Almost like the throttle wanted to 'stick'.

If you notice this as well, I would lean (no pun intended :D ) towards richening up the jetting.

(get it? Lean? L-e-a-n.... ok bad pun).

What's your current setup? (is it stock at this point?)

Definately do check the hot start lever. Sometimes it can bind up and not close all the way. I have a buddy who learned the hard way.

Well, the drag on the clutch might be handled by an adjustment, but that will not have anything to do with the high idle. If anything, that would slow the idle down due to drag.

It has done it before in stock condition but after I rejetted it was fine..I am clueless because it does have about 500 miles on it and the valves are fine...I live at about 7200 feet and ride to about 8500...I ride pretty hard but am also a maintenance freak....It seems to be idling fine but I have yet to get real hot...Jaws should I check the valves again

If you checked them properly and recently then I say no. Again, valves won't cause a high hanging idle. Loss of compression and hard starting, yes. A high hanging idle is almost always a lean condition. Make sure the carb boots are tight. Try spraying a little starting fluid around the boot when it is idling. If it speeds up you have an air leak. Check that hot start system.

BTW what mods have you done and what is your jetting?

150 main...clip in 3 from the top as per JD instructions...open air box...fuel screw is 2 1/4 turns out...no air filter screen and FMF powercore along with the boyeson quick shot..I rejetted it shortly after I got it about 6 months ago...have not had this problem until now

OK, then run don't walk down to the auto parts house and get some starting fluid and spray away. You must have an airleak somewhere, It could still be the hot start too, which is the equivalent of an airleak as that is it's function..
