    Stock carb settings question

    by Gill250X » Fri May 18, 2007 7:11 am

Hello everyone. I am a long time reader but first time poster. I have a dilemma/concern I would like your help with. I am in the process of getting/performing the initial modifications on my bike (air box, backfire screen, baffle, jetting--pilot, leak, needle, main and ap--and fuel screw; however, I would like to ride this weekend and my JD jetting kit is not in yet.

I have left the baffle in for now but did open the airbox and took out the screen. I realize I will be making a lean bike even worse and I am concerned with damaging by baby.

My question: Without doing any rejetting (as I do not have any yet), is there anything I can do to the stock carb settings to make for a more rich mixture? Will changing the clip position from stock help? Will backing out the fuel screw help?

Or, am I stuck until the kit arrives? Should I keep the baffle in, put the backfire screen back in for my ride this weekend to keep things from being too lean?

Caveat: I noticed in some of Agent S's replies on removing the baffle that he cut off both discs and then drilled a 1/2 in hole in the remaining portion (or he just cut off one disk....this still applies. I may be misunderstanding this as the only disk that is not open on the inside is the end. If I were to cut the end disk off of mine I can see through the entire baffle without any obstruction. Thus, the drilling of any hole is not necessary if I cut the end disk. Could my baffle be made differently since it is newer...I have an 06.

Thanks in advance for the help. My compliments on a superb website as well as the helpful and articulate responses.

    Best, Gill

Welcome to the site. You can lower your clip one step and run the fuel screw out to between 2 and 2-1/2 turns to help.

There are several ways to mod the baffles, but for now, leave it stock to help on the lean condition. When you do your jetting, then alter the baffle. The mods are a "system" and a lot of air in without an outlet won't change things much. BTW the baffle is the same as all.

Don't get too excited and do something drastic. If it were me, I would leave it all stock until you get the parts you need. It is still a great machine and loads of fun even in it's stock state. If it's new, this is the best time to ride it a lot in stock form so that when you do the mods you know what improved.

Thanks Jaws. So I am clear, lowering the clip one setting actually will raise the needle which given the taper of the needle will give more fuel, correct?

Will the set up you suggested work "best" with the baffle and backfire screen in with only the top of the box open...or, should I keep the baffle in and keep the screen out? More simply, would you recommend the same settings on a stock bike with the top of the airbox open...while waiting for the kit of course;)

NC, I have about 150 miles on the bike as completely stock for the exact reasons you suggested. I have spent my money thus far on protecting myself and the bike and just now feel I have a good enough baseline of what the bike can do to necessitate some performance upgrades.

Correct on the clip setting. You can leave the screen off without issue. Leave the baffle in for now. Those settings will get you by. You've already gotten by in stock form for 150 miles. One more weekend will not cause you an issue (unless you are running the Baja 500! :)). When you do the mods and wake up the bike, you will be much happier with it's performance.

    Great!

Another question...the recommended 42 pilot does not come in the JD jetting kit and I need to get it from my dealer, correct?

If I swap out the pilot jet to a 42, how does that effect the setup you already recommended?

Also, how do I change the pilot jet?

    Thanks once again ;)

I believe that recently JD began including the pilot jet in the kit for the 250X.

There is a post on here somewhere and JD noticed that the pilot jet needed to be included so he stated that he would start sending it out in the new packages, so odds are that you will get one with yours.

The pilot jet is located near the main jet. When you get them and look up in there, you will have no problem figuring out which is which, even more so if you start pulling them out, they will be similar. Good luck.
