2004 was the year that they had issues with valves. I dont see a year in the ad.

When buying a used 4 stroke, be prepared to ask to have it put through a leak-down test. If it passes that and runs well, then you may be OK. Ask for maintenance records. What type of oil and how often changed for both sides. How often the filter was changed.

Look for obvious signs of wear and abuse. Ask to test ride it.

I haven't purchased any used dirt bikes yet, but I have bought some used street bikes. I had a rule, if the guy had mods, he probably rode the crap out of it so don't fall for that low miles stuff.

They say the 04 has head problems and that is a load of crap, I just did the valves on my 04 and the head looked great. The mechanic that did the machine work told us the same thing.

There is no difference in the 04 and 05 head. The same valves, springs, cotters, keppers, seals, guides, and seats. They only changed the seat materal in 06.

We hear more about the 04 only because they have more hours.

Why would they change the seat material if there were no issues?

Not saying there isn`t issues, but i read lot of people saying that the 04 was the "bad year", when in fact it`s the same as 05.

If you want to stay away from the 04 because valve issues, then you need to feel the same about the 05.

    Agreed.

And BTW, I'm not saying stay away from the 04's or 05's. Just go into them knowing that a valve job is in the near future. If you can pick one up for a song, do it!

The worst case scenario on a head is about $ 700. That's for a new 07 Head, RHC ferrea coated steel intake valves, springs, keepers and stock exhaust valves.

If you can get one cheap throw that into it, you'll have a sick bike that is realiable as well.

    oil seal problem

by [email protected] » Sun May 20, 2007 10:01 am

yea be very carful, there is a major crank shaft oil seal problem,. this seal will start to leak and all your oil from the motor side will transfer to the trany side..resulting in major damage!!! i know..it happened to me..it cost me over a $1000 to repair...honda did make a updated seal that should fix the problem, but it is only in the 07 models..so if you have a 06 or old LOOK OUT!!..mabe check into getting a KTM or WR. you cant go wrong with those bikes

Well i didn't get to see the other bike but here is an other listing. Does anyone have any feed back on this bike? Do you think this would have taken care of any possible valve problems? See add below.

Well, it certainly has all or most of the stuff. Again, though you should request (and pay for) a leak down test. Look at the over all appearance for signs of abuse. Ride it, test the clutch and brake operations. Look at the air filter. Ask about the maintenance schedule he used. Look at the wear on the sprockets and chain. How does it shift, sound, look??

In other words check it over really well. IF it passes the leak down and looks good, then it may be OK. WHile it in the shop getting the leak down done, you can ask the mechanic to look it over as well. An honest owner shouldn't mind that at all.
