OK, I've searched, lurked and googled 'til I'm blue in the face. I decided to forget about finding a bargain on ebay or Crigslitst, etc.

I need some help from the the only place I've found on the internet that appreciates a CRF250X as much as I do.

Scotts or GPR? Stock bars or fat ones? I've grown accustomed to the bend of the stock Renthals, but I'm not wild about having to bend the crossbar. Also interested in maybe switching to fat bars.

While I'm not made of money, I'd like to spend what it takes to do it right the first time.

Advice and feedback is greatly appreciated.

Simple questions!!! First Welcome to the site...

The answer is: Scotts with a BRP SUBmount and protaper Windham bend bars.

The Scotts IMHO is the best stabilizer out there. The BRP SUBmount (SUB stands for Scott's Under Bars) is very strong and puts the damper under the bars for safety. The ProTaper fatbars are the best and the Windham bend is identical to the Renthal 971's that are stock.

    Damn!

That was fast....and thanks for the welcome. 8)

As I'm sure many do, I've been visiting the site from time to time, picking up great tips and tricks and enjoying a good read in general.

Only a few of my riding buddies have ever used a stabilizer and I thought I'd get another perspective.

    I sure do appreciate it.

I'll never ride without one. The added insurance of a stabilizer is worth it's weight in gold.

The benefit I gain from the stabilizer is being able to look farther ahead. Without it, I keep my eyes close infront, picking my lines carefully. Speed is not a factor because you can't anticipate what is coming if you aren't looking ahead. When you no longer need to look directly infront of you, speed increases because you can anticipate what's ahead.

Stick around for awhile, join in the conversation and let us know about your bike and your rides. This is a family after all...

Sounds like if I stick around here too much it'll cost me. I guess I'm about to drop a few bucks in the "Company Store" here.

But when you add in the advice, it's a bargain! 8)

On the Scotts front, just Saturday I was coming through a section and had to go over a mound. Due to dust and shadows I couldn't see there was a hole on the other side. It had a square edge that was formed around a root at an angle going left. It then intersected with another root at a slightly greater angle. I came down hard into the hole and hit the edge hard. Full suspension compression and then the angled root took over. The front wheel started a slide to the left and then hit the other root. The whole bike tilted at a crazy angle and rebounded off the root. Without the Scotts I suspect the bars would have wrenched violently and I would have crashed hard.

The end result was that I still had control because the wrenching never took place. Thank you Scotts! Get one and never look back!

    Thanks for the feedback guys!

I placed the order last night. Can't wait to do the install and give 'er a try in a couple of weeks.

Any suggestions or recommendations as to a starting point for the settings? Or, will that be explained in the directions?

Jaws, I know all too well that flash of clarity at the very moment something crazy is about to happen!

I think it is magnified by 100x when you are riding behind your 12 year old daughter as she is ripping up a trail on her YZ 85 at full tilt and you are trying to replicate that speed and agility on a bigger bike while watching what both of you do! Scary to say the least.

I have my hi-speed set to factory and the low-speed about 8 clicks off of full on for normal riding. I move it to about 4 clicks out for sand.
You'll wonder why you waited after you ride it.

Sounds like you would have been "rooted" without it ...

And please revise your sig size .... so many wasted electrons ....

Yeah, rooted was exactly what I would have been. I recently reduced my sig size. You must be on dial up.

The Scotts IMHO is the best stabilizer out there.

You made the right choice there bud, nice set-up.You'll be using that same Scotts 4 bikes or more down the road, too, which takes a lot of the sting out of initial purchase cost.
I always seem to wind up with mine with everything stock too, with the big knob 6-8 out, maybe 4 for nasty rocks and sand just like the other guys.
The benefit I gain from the stabilizer is being able to look farther ahead.

That's an advanced riding skill, and anything that helps us regular Joes work on things like that with confidence is a good thing. Doug

Thought I'd follow-up on the stabilizer install.

We were out by Cal City over the Memorial Day weekend and surprisingly enough it wasn't very crowded.

I had totally forgotten about the stabilizer until we hit a trail that goes from hard pack to deep sand. As soon as I saw the deep stuff I braced myself in anticipation of what usually happens.......wow, how do you explain "nothing"? That's what happened, nothing. No shake, no wiggle.

I sped up and caught my buddy to tell him how the stabilizer worked. He then made it his mission to seek out every nasty trail he could find to see just how good it worked. We switched bikes and he was impressed too.

I have a feeling I'll be seeing something new on his bike sometime soon! ;)

Hate to be an I-told-you-so! :) Glad it worked out. They are one of the best upgrades going.
