    Follow-up to my clogged carb....

    by glacierskier » Sun May 13, 2007 1:11 pm

    New 06 crf250x with 150 miles.
Oct 2006 my last ride (before the snow) bike would stall in any downhill section where clutch was engaged and no throttle given. Always restarted.

This spring bike would not start at all. Thanks to all your advice. I pulled the bottom of the carb. Probably bad gas, all was clogged. I soaked the jets, and blew them out with compressed air. Changed gas ensured tank was clean. With e-start bike wants to fire but will not. The pipes heat up and a back fire now and then, but still will not fire. I have to kick-it with quarter throttle. If it is cool the bike will start. It runs well until it heats up then it just cuts out. Will not restart, until it cools a bit.

Spark plug is brand new and the old one was in good shape.

please chime in with any ideas. I have not checked the valves as of yet. Hoping I did not have to with only 150 miles.

    Thanks

You might check to see if the float is stuck.

You mentioned that on inclines that it would stall. That would tell me that the float level is wrong and it is starving for fuel. I would look at that first.

    float stuck?

    by glacierskier » Sun May 13, 2007 1:41 pm

Float seemed ok with the bottom of the carb off. How would I know it was stuck? It moved pretty freely when I was replacing the carb screws and cleaning the jets.

The float valve needle itself might be stuck. Press on it with a small screwdriver to see if it's moving freely.

To set float level, with the carb off the bike and the float bowl removed, hold the carb in such a manner that the float pivot is above the float. Tilt the carb until the float just kisses its float valve needle, but doesn't compress the float needle's internal spring. Measure from the float bowl sealing surface to the highest point of the float at a 90 degree angle to the sealing surface. Bend the float tab that touches the little nub on the needle to change the float height. Correct height should be 9mm.

    Carb Float

Last time I pulled the bottom it the float seemed OK. It had moved freely.

When I kick the bike over it runs until it heats up then dies. Would this too suggest float issues? Or something else?

Do you have an aftermarket gas tank vent?

This is kinda the same thing my 06 250x is doin. I only got 60 mls. on it. Once i ride for about 10 minutes and it heats up it'll start cutting out and die. It wont start after that either. My bikes brand new too.

Make sure your gas tank vent line is not clogged or kinked. Been known to happen.
