    2006 CRF250X jetting question

    by AnotherRube » Sun May 06, 2007 9:49 am

I ride at 3,500 to 5,500 feet and it gets pretty warm 70-95 degrees. I have the air box top off, backfire screen out, stock exhaust drilled, Twin Air filter, and an adjustable fuel screw. I currently have the JD red needle 5th position, 158 main, and 42 pilot. Oh, fuel screw at 1.75.

Here's the question(s): Should I drop down to the 155 main and lower the needle one clip? The current setting seems a little fat. I'm tempted to just move the needle one position. Anyone ride at a similar elevation range with this set up? Thanks!

We run a similar set up at similar elevations. No issues.

I'm running the identical set up, and basically same elevation and temps. No problems......you can adjust to subtle elevation differences with the fuel screw, and keep the other main jet handy in case you really come down in elevation. The main jet is easy to change.

I greatly appreciate the input. But just so I'm clear, you two (~ and BigD)are both running 158 main and red needle at 5th position? Thanks.

I ride similar elevations and temps (maybe a bit cooler) I am currently running a 45-165 with the JD needle in the fifth position and think the bike is running at the top of it's game. Why do you think your bike is a little on the fat side?

I'm no expert, but it just feels rich. I base this on the way it rides at lower elevations and that it smells like gas at low speeds. I notice you run a PowerCore exhaust, that would allow richer settings?

I checked the jetting database first thing. (A very cool idea by the way.) Unfortunately, the only person running a relatively stock bike at 3,500 -5,000 feet is RedRooster and he is running a 155 main per JD's instructions. Don't know. It looks like I may just have to give the leaner setting a try and see how it goes.

Better to be rich than lean... just some food for thought.

I am running my bike as rich as it gets... I have not noticed a significant difference in running it at 0' or 5000'. I had more problem with dialing in the fuel screw then I had with jetting. I jetted rich, opened up the air box, and put on a straight pipe. I was originally running a 42-162 but decided to go bigger when I installed the HC stage 1.
For your elevation and temps... the 42-158, red#5 should work perfect... I would go with the adjustments of the fuel screw and maybe an AP mod. The gas smell you get at slow speeds could be anything... personally, I would keep your bike the way it is, and try to fine tune it with the F/S, etc... just my 2 cents.
