    Factory Valve Specs

    by XRedRiderX » Wed Apr 11, 2007 10:35 am

This has probably been asked before but here goes. Just checked the valves on my 06. I have six hours ride time by the hour meter and 108 miles on the odometer. The intakes spec at a tight .005 and the exhaust are at .009. Is it unlikely the valves were tighter than what their specs say per the manual when the bike left the factory or is this a future problem I need to remedy now before it goes too far too soon? I fully expected to have valve problems so I'm not in shock, just wondering if i need to order new parts now and swap things over earlier than I expected too.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

    Welcome to the site!

Nothing to worry about. You now have a baseline measurement with which to compare future findings.

The intakes are the ones to watch. .005 is right on the money.

The 2006 models don't have the valve issues of the earlier models.

    Ride it and enjoy it.

BTW-Do some mods and get that thing running like it should be.

The valve clearances for the 250X are as follows:
    intake .004-.006
    exhaust .010-.012

So, your intakes are fine and your exhausts are a little off. Make certain that you have checked them correctly. There are many that have made mistakes here. It is possible that this is the way you got it from the dealer. I would re-check and then you can shim if needed to bring them into spec (although the amount your exhaust is out is very little and doesn't need to be "fixed"). You certainly haven't put enough time on them to be having an issue with wear, unless your air filter isn't mounted correctly and it's passing in dirt.

I rechecked them making sure the timing marks were right on and the exhausts are at .010 and the intakes still a tight .005. I have made most of the ccc mods already, the jd jetting kit, and opened the exhaust baffle. It runs greats I just like to be cautious and prepared for the worst case scenario.

    Thanks again,

Great, although the intakes are not tight at .005 they are right in the middle. Nothing wrong with that at all! :)
