have any of you guys or gals changed the gearing on your 250x? i race enduro's in the southeast and 2nd gear seems to be a little too tall and 3rd not quite tall enough for the tight woods. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.1st time posting. 06 250x

I dropped a tooth in the front and am very happy with the gearing, esp in the tight stuff. I am not a racer though

I'm curious: do you mean 2nd gear feels like you have to whine it out too high to make decent use out of it? As well as when you shift to 3rd it feels luggy? If this is what you're describing, yes I agree with you 110%. 3rd gear in the woods with the stock setup is almost a let-down, once you have begun to get good at turning fast, and want to increase your overall speed. You start using 3rd only to find it lugs too much, unless you have screamed fresh out of 2nd gear before moving to 3rd.
I haven't had a chance to try mine yet, but I just switched to 13/51, which would be the same as running 14/55 (except no one makes a 55-tooth rear sprocket). I'll let you know how that feels vs. stock, but from what I understand it will be snappier in throttle response, but lose some overall top-end speed. I understand this is also the stock setup on 250R's - I'll let you know what it's like, hopefully in a couple days time. I'm hoping it will help 3rd gear out, which it should! (Might render 1st gear pretty useless, unless I'm stuck in a cake-batter/rainy day mud field).

you are right monkeywrench, i have to rev the snot out of it in 2nd and in 3rd i have to use a lot of clutch. please let me know what you think of your gearing after your ride. i got another enduro coming up in the mountains of alabama. sure to be some tight goat trails there. thanks for the input.

Hello offrdrdr:
The stock countershaft sprocket from the 250R is one tooth smaller than the 250X. It made my X much more managable in the "tight stuff". I was never satisfied with the stock gearing before hand, found too much clutching in first and a gap in ratios between 1st and 2nd gears. Try it, you will love your 250X all over again! Peter

Hello offrdrdr:
Let me know how you liked the gearing change! I am jealous, as its still too cold (around 32f) and the weather can't quite decide if we are going to have rain or snow!

Just nice to hear of others out there riding.

Hey guys I thought i would chime in here.
I had the same problem with 2nd and 3rd as described.
I ran a 13/53 this past weekend and it was great for me.
It seemed as if i was always between those two gears before.
Now I can run 3rd gear most of the day. Much more "tractable" power coming out of hard corners.
