6 or 8-cup for dune riding??

    by RockstarSMP » Fri Mar 30, 2007 9:01 pm

    Hey all,

Next month I'm going to Pismo Dunes. I've ridden dunes before on my [sold] 2smoke, but not on my 250 thumper I got a few months ago. I have an 8-cup paddle already, but someone told me to run a 6-cup because the bike doesn't really have enough power for the 8-cup. Will the 8-cup be ok, or would I be wise to shell out a few bucks for a 6-cup?

FYI--It's an '05 250x that's been rejetted/piped and all the no-go stuff has been taken off. Other than that, it's still the stock gearing; stock, 250x cam; and the rear wheel is still the 18-incher. I'm about 180 pounds...

    Thanks!

I have heard that too about the 8 paddle tire, but my bike has more than enough power to haul my fat-a$$ around so I can't imagine it not working. I know sand sucks the power out of your engine, but I would think it would be fine. According to the dirt rider dudes, Trials tires actually work pretty well in sand. If you go with the 8 paddle, please post your thoughts on it.

Sorry I forgot to get back to you...

I went with the 8-cup, but didn't realize it was about 50% worn until we were in the sand and I compared my tire to my friend's. Seemed to work well once I got going, but I'm still inconclusive b/c the tire was so worn. Sorry I can't give much of an opinion, and I'd rather not take my 250 to the sand again.

Unfortunately, I am in the process of having to revalve the head now. Not sure if that's because I was in the sand, or if it was just that time. The bike does have about 1400 miles on the stock, TI valves...
