    Head Light

    by newguy009 » Mon Mar 05, 2007 6:45 pm

I'm going to wire my headlight and taillight DC with a switch. I have got the tail figured out although can quite find the right combo on the headlight wires ?

I too would like to include a switch for my headlight only. Any advice? Also, my stock bulb is running really dim. Is it burned out or is there another problem?

Install the switch to 'interrupt' the ground. Very simply a single pole/ single throw switch in circuit so that when 'switched' the ground wire is a closed circuit (connected) to the chassis. When switched off the ground wire is 'lifted' from the circuit.
Personally I would leave everything connected as there is no draw or benefit from taking these lights out of the circuit.

I have taken mine off now, but I had mine directly wired to the battery (with a switch in there of course). It worked great; nice and bright, but not bright enough for good visibility for a high speed night ride in the dezert IMO. also if you look you will notice two bulb filaments (stock config has just one running) I set mine up to light both filaments for max light.

SMRANGER, so what do you wire which way to get that 2nd filament burning bright.

I had a split second thought about switching the headlight but then figured it wouldn't be worth it.

But after reading this thread, not only do I want to put a switch on it. I want to make it as bright as possible for low light/night rides in the woods.

Is there just another wire in the light wire harness to splice in or????

    Good info!

CRF230PILOT, If you look at the headlight harness, there should be 3 wires in it. Stock config is only using two. I basically shorted the two hot wires together to get both filaments running at the same time.

    revs, check out

    SMRANGER,

Thanks man! I went to Radio Shack and got the "single pole" swith Rick Ramsey mentions.

I am going to wire the 2 filaments together for one BRIGHT light this weekend.

And then switch it on or off as needed. Because when I turn it on I will need it bright as can be.
And when it's not dark outside I don't want
"no stinkin daytime running lights" on my bike 8)

    Thanks!

Be careful, you will be taxing your stator pretty hard. it only puts out about 44 watts and with both filaments it'll want 70.

Ok learning as I go here...

The Stator has to be rewound to produce more output.
So I rewired the light for both filaments to work and it doesn't make a difference with the stock wind on the Stator 45 watts or so. I most likely got 10 more watts since I had only a 35 watt filament burning before and now I have two but they are getting no more than 45 watts total. Oh well, another $100 and Trail Tech will rewind my Stator and I'll have 100watts available!!!! So I can then take advantage of my wiring the 2 filaments to burn at the same time. Remember I don't want hi/lo, I want BRIGHT! Which means another $29 for the PIAA H6M bulb, look it up here in the store.

But what I did get was a nice switch that interrupts the ground wire and I mounted it like Rick Ramsey's sort of, by the right bar mount on the top triple clamp.

So no more daytime running light for me!
I may get a "R" number plate as I think about how little use my "X" light will get. Definitely a great option to have and always bring in the truck when we go ride the longer trails that may keep us into dark.

Just thought I would post my learning experience for others to find by search for " Headlight ".
