'09 230M very jumpy off idle

    by 148am » Mon Oct 21, 2013 2:28 pm

First post here, been lurking and absorbing info so thanks for the helpful info so far.

I'm relatively new to motorcycle mechanics so not sure where this question will take me.

'09 CRF230M, all stock/no mods with 3xxx miles. Throttle response just off idle is very sharp, the bike lurches sharply. Pretty terrible in 1st from a stop (no, I don't think it's my clutch technique, although generous slipping obviously makes for a smooth start).

Noticeable in all gears and also while under way and rolling, clutch lever out. Is this just the way it goes with this bike?

What I've done or checked, with no affect on the "problem":
    - Carb came off yesterday and got fully cleaned (was pretty clean to start with).
    - Chain is good, freeplay ~2.5cm.
    - Cleaned and greased throttle cable guide at the tube, dry lube in throttle cable housings, adjusted slack on throttle cables.

    Thanks for the help.

I should add that the opposite is also true, it's quite jerky coming off the throttle though not as much.

To (inexperienced) me, it feels like the recoil from change in chain tension under load or not. Does that seem reasonable?

Taller gearing makes this more pleasant as does probably a richer idle jet.

    Thanks Ray.

Seems that there is no space for even one tooth larger on the front on this bike, which is pretty surprising. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Pilot jet seems like a good next step as richening the idle mixture did help.
