08 CRF230L Runs Like a Dog (only slower!)

    by bbehling » Sun Dec 04, 2011 2:32 pm

I have been looking for a JD jetting kit but cannot find...anyone help here? Also, carb was gunked up with ethanol crap, cleaned it but will try again, since it runs only marginally better. Did the smog kit removal, but not much improvement although glad it's gone! This bike runs very poorly. Resides at 8300 ft. elevation and the trail riding we do takes it only higher in elevation. Honestly considering getting rid of it since it is such a dog. I'm looking for some throttle response, does not need to scream! My wife likes it quiet like it is, but I 'm thinking that the exhaust may be over-restricted. As I have lots of time to tinker this winter, any suggestions??? Thanks for any help! :?

Welcome to CRF's Only! Has it every run well? Is this poor performance new?

Unfortunately, JD has not produced a jetting kit for the 230L/M models. The only kit I am aware of is the Moose Racing kit and we do offer this kit. However, we don't have personal experience with it as we do our jetting kits and JD kits so I can't say from experience how well they work.

Having said that, Honda's are typically jetted lean from the factory and horribly lean in the pilot circuit. If your 230L has been sitting for a long time then you likely have clogged or partially clogged jets. They are very difficult to clean completely. You could also have other issues relating to is sitting with with fuel in the carb. If this is the case, I recommend cleaning the carb and replacing the jets.

You could also try the Moose Jet Kit we offer and see if that helps.

Thanks for replying! I looked around for the Moose kit you refered to but can't find it... :( I would be glad to order it as I guess cleaning out the carb did not do it. Thanks for any help. It originally ran OK enough but degraded once we moved to higher elevation and it sat too much.
