    Review: Garmin Etrex Vista CX

    by SJ90 » Tue Jan 20, 2009 9:46 pm

When I was looking for a gps i noticed that there wasn't much on this site so i decided to put something up here.

I ended up buying a Garmin Etrex Vista CX from ebay for about $140. http://cgi.ebay.ca/GARMIN-GPS-eTrex-Vista-Cx-Color-Handheld-Receiver_W0QQitemZ220343875735QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGPS_Devices?hash=item220343875735&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A15%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

This is a good unit for the price. It usual takes about 15 seconds to a minute to locate the satellites depending where you are. The speedometer is dead accurate, i tested it in my car. Once its connected i haven't had any problems with it disconnecting in the woods yet. It is usually accurate to 2-3 meters. The screen is a little small to try to see if your driving or riding(sketchy no matter how big the screen is).

Maps wise if you wanna stay legal it gets pricey fast. There is home made topo maps at http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/, they are good quality, comparable to garmins topo maps. If you want to also use this as a city gps i haven't found a free version of these yet but the gps is capable and very useful for this also.

I have no complaints for this gps yet it has excellent battery life as long as the back light isn't left on, around 30 hours on two AA's. The one i got off ebay is the same seller and mine came with a 128mb card so i can load tons of maps onto it, right now i have most of B.C.

I'll post more once i get some more time on it but so far so good.

No mount for it yet. I just put it in my back pack. I think i'm gonna make a mount before summer cause i'm not a fan of some of the ones out there and im trying to save the little money i have for a new bike. If i do figure it out i'll let you know.

    I use a RAM mount http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResults ... fault.aspx

This is the place that I have ordered from before.

I thought Ken sold the ram mount on CRF's but I can't find it.

The mount should cost about $25 shipped. Also ask for the short arm. That will reduce vibration and keep the GPS close to the bars.
