    big wheel vs standard

    by rhiocrf230 » Fri Jul 12, 2013 4:36 pm

My wife is upgrading from a 2001 xr 200. She is 5-8 and about 140 pounds. We would be doing mostly fire roads and some tight trails. Would this bike work for her? It seems it would be a lot lighter and faster than the current XR

I am looking at a brand new 2012 150 R model still at the dealer. This is the standard version not the big wheel. Does anyone think this might be a good fit?

    Thanks.....

if you do get a 150R the big wheel version would fit her better at 5'8". at her height, the 250X would be a better bike in my opinion.

    +1

the 150RB is "okay" if you are 5'-6" or less and racing MX. 5'-5" is about max for comfortable trail riding. The bike is just too short, and wheels too small (even the RB) to smooth out the bumps and have a comfortable ride.

I was 5-8 before I started to shrink, and the RB feels dangerous when I am on it because of the small size and choppy ride.

At 5-8" you can spring the 250X properly for her weight and pick up a guts soft seat to make the height a bit more compliant.

i agree the 250X might be a better fit at her height. a lot depends on her riding style and comfort with a full size (and weight) bike.

If you do decide to go for the 150RB (Big Wheel) ... my 5'6" 120 pound ex bought a 2012 which she has ridden only a couple of times. She's decided it's not the bike for her and plans to sell. She's in Lexington KY so shipping would be involved.

It's easier to make a tall bike smaller, than a small bike taller.

Having both of these bikes, I would say if you think your wife can handle the 250x in the tight trails and is able to pick up a 254 lb bike, then it's a great bike.

The 150RB is 187 lbs which makes it more nimble in the tight stuff.

Both will be much more powerful than the xr200.
