    Looking for opinions please!

    by acampbell » Wed Sep 09, 2020 7:17 pm

Hi! I’m new to the forum and was hoping I could get some opinions from my fellow lady riders 8) I recently sold my TTR125 & was looking to upgrade. I was thinking a CRF150F or possibly a CRF150R. I am roughly 5’5-5’6 & weigh about 135-140. I am probably an intermediate rider, and mostly do just trail riding. I did fine on my TTR but the rear shock was totally blown out it was like riding a pogo stick. My own personal preference is Honda though so that’s what I’m trying to get as my next bike. My biggest concern with the CRF150F is the weight of the bike. & my concern with the R is that it is a race bike & from what I’ve seen riding it in trails I would almost have to ride it as if it were a 2Stroke so it would require a lot of clutch work but I was told if I replaced the sprocket with a bigger one it would help with that issue. Any input / suggestions on what you think would be good for my next bike would definitely be extremely helpful & appreciated! Along with looking into the CRF150s I also considered a CRF230, CRF125, TTR125LE or KLX140. I am also trying to keep in mind that I what I get next I don’t want to outgrow the bike within a year or two.. Thank you in advanced!!!

Hello, we don't have many lady riders here but from what you are describing your questions are really not gender specific, more size and experience specific. I'll give you a little opinion for what its worth.
All good bikes you have listed in your lineup. The 230 is naturally the heaviest and largest of the bunch. It's a pretty heavy bike. Good seat height for you and plenty of power. Good basic bike that you should be able to handle and not outgrow.
Ray on the site has a lot of experience on the 230's and can probably tell you anything you want to know about them.

Have you considered the Yamaha TW200? really fun bike that is easy to ride and bullet proof. Lot's of options available also. Kind of a cult following of those T-Dub's.
I was and have been a Honda guy forever but Yamaha has far out done Honda in later years in quality and engineering. Just my opinion of course. If you want a bike you are not going to outgrow, I would lean towards the 200cc or over, like the 230 if you want Honda.

Maybe gives you some things to think about.

You bet. Don't be a stranger. We can always use new people with new ideas and experiences.
Make sure to check back in and see if Ray has some insight for you on the 230.

    Safe riding.

    Hi acampbell,

I am 5'10, both legs are on the shorter side so a bit of tipy toe riding is necessary. Either that or pull up with a high spot to put your foot down.
Old motorcrosser taught me that as their seats are higher again.
If you are an intermediate rider this may not be an issue.

That said I wouldn't want it much lower on trails and with a few tweaks they keep up pretty well especially on the twisty bits where they hold their own.
Like most fun bikes they all need better suspension and the 230F is well catered for, albeit at expense.
The advantage is you are probably perfect weight for stand springs.
Engine is simple and well proven.
My bike has not been lowered, changed link or had seat shaved.
Try a few bikes for size at a dealer. Consider if you wish to drive on the road and whether a dual sport maybe an option to consider.

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

Hey! I went to the dealerships today I sat on two KLX140s the medium & biggest model, went to another dealer sat on the crf125 big wheel, ttr125le & a ttr230. The ttr230 wasn’t brand new it was a 2017 they want 3300$ for it the size felt good I can’t quiet flat foot it but I can reach the ground. The crf125 was to small. & the ttr125 sat higher than the crf125 did but not by to much. I was really leaning towards the ttr230 the price seemed like a good deal from what we were seeing online. Any opinion on the ttr230? They didn’t have Honda’s

Those are bullet proof bikes! I would buy it over a Honda. They are made in Japan and the quality is top. Hold their value very well also.

That's a good idea. Give it thought and what the gut feeling is.
You cannot go wrong with a Honda 230 or the Yamaha 230. Sometimes it 's nice to let someone else put the first couple little scratches in a bike so you don't feel so bad taking a brand new bike out. Sure feels nice to save some $$$ too!
Best of luck and let us know what you go with.
