    Any Newbies ?

    by kpduty » Tue Jun 16, 2009 7:50 pm

    Hi,

Wanted to see if there are any newbies on the forum to trade pointers.

I'm new to the forum and returning to riding after  25 yrs. I'm 35 but haven't ridden since I was a kid on little 80s, which is basically starting over.

My boyfriend is a lifelong rider (enduros mostly) and I've been hitching rides on the back of his bike for too long. He's been awesome about getting me started and really excited that I'm riding (I got a pair of new boots for Valentine's Day - can't beat that :D ) I started on his old race bike - a Husqvarna 125 - but it was too tall and a bit tricky to learn on, so I got a CRF230F for a Fischer-Price "My First Dirt Bike". I love it !

I'd really like to see if there's even anyone in NY or New England who would like to ride sometime...

    Hi Michelle !

Desert racing sound really good right now. I'm in the eastern part of NY. We have a lot of tight woods trails and trees are my biggest enemy right now, mostly when they're on a turn with really deep mud ruts  But I guess a cactus wouldn't be any better for an unplanned stop...

This forum is awesome - I want to learn more about working on my bike, too, and these guys great for that.

Might try a hare scramble somewhere down the line. The 230 isn't exactly a race bike, but it's fast enough for me for now.

I'll keep in touch. Let me know how your race season is going.

    And Happy Birthday !

Sounds like the riding up there is really nice. If you go north here its about the same terrain. The Sierra Nevada's are an awesome place to ride, especially when all the wild flowers are blooming. So what is your occupation and how old are you? Would like to keep in touch. Talk to you soon. I rode this afternoon and yes, it's really nice country to ride. Unfortunately, NY state is totally anti-dirtbake with regard to state land. We can only ride on private property :x 5 million acres of state-owned land and they can't seem to spare a corner for us. I am really jealous of you guys out west...but I guess you have to fight to keep a lot of your riding areas, too.

Anyway, I'm 35 and a landscape architect, but I work for a government agency and spend most of my time securing environmental permitting (wetlands and stuff like that) for transportation projects. A little boring, but it puts gas in the bike :)

    How about you ?

    Hi kpduty,

Well that really sucks about the government. We have them here too. Bureau of Landgrabbing Maggots  . What gets me is that it's our public land that they are putting up road blocks on. What a cool job you have. Thats awesome that you protect the environment. Its good to be green. Well I work for a dentist. I'm currently an RDA but I'm going to school and plan on becoming a hygienist. I'm 37 so hopefully by the time I'm 40 I'll have my degree. So back to some dirt talk. What have you heard about factory connection as far as suspension goes. And have you ever heard of Too Tech out of LA california. I need to send my suspension to someone because I need my bike lowered and I would really like to dial it in before my next race. Have any suggestions??? Talk to you soon Michelle :D

    Hi,

I'm pretty useless right now for any advice on setup. I'm just learning all this stuff. I asked my very knowlegable BF, however, and he said Factory connection is good with showas (he used them for one of his race bikes) and mentioned KoubaLink. Sounds like ~ could give you some more detailed info :)

Oh, the world definitely need good, nice hygenists ! I'm a dental wimp and the woman who works with my dentist is awesome at making you feel better (I also secretly think she knows more than the dentist does ;) ) so good luck with your studies !

Rode the bike this weekend and I have officially learned to like sliding around in the mud - we've had a LOT of rain this month and I either had to face the mud or go home. I laid the bike down twice but started it up and bulldogged on. Whoo-hoo !

Keep me posted on your suspension. Everyone who sticks with the 230's seems to do the forks at some point...so that might be in my future.
