Midwest riders feel cooped up with 8 weeks of ice storm, then 7" blizzard, then 4" more snow, then 3&4" snows in as many days. I WANT TO RIDE!

Even worse around my parts. It's too cold to ride dirtbikes and not cold enough to ride snowmobiles. We have no snow. The sun finally came out yesterday after 4 straight days of clouds. Dang...I'm getting depressed!!

On the plus side, SX season started and we're getting a good season with some drama.

Snowmoblies ! That sounds fun, I have never swung a leg over one of those. Have you seen the post with videos of the guys who build and ride the dirtbikes with the snow track set up on the back, and the ski up front? Looks like they get around good, and a blast to ride.

Yes I have. It would be a fun project. But for the money for the machine and the $ for the conversion kit, you can't touch the exhilaration of doing 120mph down a haywire. Snowmobiles provide an unmatched rush that no other off-road machine can provide. Kinda like riding a quads on the dirt...it's kinda cool for awhile, but just doesn't cut it!! ;)

Here's a shot of what a haywire looks like [insert goosebumps here]

Another gratuitous "can't-wait-to-ride-a-sled" shot... :D

120 m.p.h. ? Is that what they typically will run? Or faster yet. Guess it depends on the machine and engine size. What make and model do you have?

The average 500 will do 90. 600's will run 100-110. Box stock with studs. Incredible machines.

I currently do not have a machine. Last couple seasons I've been wrenching for seat time. 90% of the people I ride with come to me for fix-it stuff, maintenance, or advise on what to purchase. I help them for free in exchange for borrowing their machine. Most of the guys I know kinda lack in the maintenance department with their machines.

They drop the machine off with me and I deliver it back to them fully maintained and cleaner than they dropped it off. Plus, any repairs/needs attended to.

Its a win/win for most of the guys. Snowmobiles more than any other motorsport benefit from use. Its better to ride them than to let them sit. They rot fast...

I know that Polaris, Artic Cat, and Bombardier are major players in that market, but aren't they generally 2 stroke powerplants?

Don't forget Yamaha.
Most are 2 strokes. The thumpers have made a strong presence though. Except, you give up power and weight if you want one.

IMO, a 4stroke snowmobile is a novelty item right now.
