Hey CRF, the riding here is pretty good, theres not a lot of really big riding areas. The biggest one is Fort Sage, it's a little like desert riding with some good single track trails and some pretty nasty hillclimbs, but there is a lot of high speed stuff too, and miles of whooped out trails that will beat you into submission. There are quite a few small areas I go to within just a few miles of my house that are good for training since people have built up jumps and tracks in the public land areas.
Last month I went to Stonyford in the mendocino national forest, if you haven't been there its some good riding, and will suit any skill level. If you go there, you'll want to go to the Grindstone ranger district. I had a blast there even though it was really dusty, the group just spread out alot with about 15 seconds between riders so nobody got dusted out.
Another place I go to is Sand Mountain in Fallon NV. Its about a 3 hour drive for me, but its a fun place if you like to ride sand dunes every once in a while.
We'll definately have to get together sometime, I have some other friends that live in Sacramento we could all get together, but they can only go on the weekends.
