Some guys at work told me about Stoddard Wells and I would like to check it out. They said it was soft dirt/sand....has anyone been there and do you need a paddle?
Thanks

No. No paddles, it's desert wash sand and gravel. Not dune type sand. Its very rocky as well.
Fun place to ride.
And the Slash X boasts the coldest beer in the desert (although DD claims his ice chest has that distinction).

We rode that area in November. Stoddard wells road turns in to a dirt road a couple miles east of the freeway. Typical desert terrain, Paddles are not needed in that area.
You need to make a trip to the slash X for a burger and a beer

Not sure what the exact directions are but there are some other posts on here with directions. Also, you can google it and I know you can find some info.

Just did a search and came up with this.
Take the 15 north, up EL Cajon Pass, drive past Victorville, shortly after that you will see a sign for Stoddard Wells Rd, go one exit past that and get off, take a left at the off ramp stop sign and drive on, it will open into the riding area.
I am sure other members can be a bit more specific, but I am planning on heading up there this weekend so I will let you know.

Just rember. When you hit the dirt road, there is a lot of private land left and right. You need to drive in about five miles and stage. Rangers were at the entrance to that area last time giving verbal warnings.
There is a road just north of the Stoddard turn off where you will not get hassled.

The area is one of my favorites. I usually pass on Stoddard on the 15 and go on to Hodge Road exit. Closer shot to Slash X (aka /X) and it's has some excellent hill trails and climbs. Flat areas for the kids and much less traffic than Stoddard, Dale Evans, etc.
When at /X be sure not to piss off Brian, teh owner, by asking to watch football. He feels it's a motorspots bar and doesn't like pigskin.

With big games coming up this weekend I'd just hate to think that you would go in there hoping to catch some playoff action. I've gotten luck in the past when he's not around the girls will put the games on, but geez oh brother you'd think I had just asked for his lungs.

That's pretty funny.
Hopefully the fact that there are a few good games on will mean less people will be out and I can get a good spot.

JWW recently posted a nice Google Earth map in the Ride Connections section. Not sure it that would help you. It's more of a view of the actual riding area from the Outlet Center to Slash X.
