    2006 crf250r clutch issue

    by Chessboxinn » Wed Aug 19, 2020 8:33 pm

I apologize if I am not making this post correctly. First post.

I just bought the bike on Sunday, 2006 crf250r, ad read stainless steel valves, fresh top end 15hrs, oil changed every 4-5hrs, new plastics, new decals. The guy seemed ok, bike runs well. I'm out on it for the second time and first long-ish run. I start getting a strange scratchy noise coming from the engine area.

Before I can get home, it's much worse. I slow to neutral and the scratchy noise is not constant but quite loud and alarming, you can tell it's coming from the clutch. When it makes the noise the bike wants to move forward and be in gear but only slightly, yet alarming as well. The rest of the way home when I was dropping the clutch after switching gears the bike would rev up like I still had the clutch disengaged.

Tonight I pulled what I thought was the drain plug. Nothing. Pulled clutches to inspect wear, no oil came out. Just some smokey grey-black nasty looking stuff when I tipped the bike over. Everything in the clutch is black or at least has black on it. Baskets and all look in ok shape, but fibres and plates are completely worn/black and springs are sort of sheared on one side of each one.

I know I need a new clutch pack with fibres steels and springs. My questions are

Why am I not seeing any tranny oil? Was that noise the clutch? Do I likely need to replace more of the clutch or could there be further damages to the bike, outside of the clutch? What are my best means of getting good parts that I need, at a relatively fast pace? I'm in Ontario.

Thank you and please instruct me in the right direction if this is the wrong place for my post.

I can post pics of clutching

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Without hearing the actual noise , it is going to be hard to pinpoint what is going on ...... but .....If you look on the left side of the engine at the ignition cover , you will see a bolt at the bottom right corner that is larger than all the rest , right about at the tip of the shifter , this is the Engine oil drain bolt .... now if you look just behind it (basically look at the bolt by the shifter tip from down low) , and you will see another bolt back in there , THAT is the tranny drain bolt

    Image

Make sure none of the plates or disks are broken , and while the plates are all out , grab the clutch basket itself and see if it wobbles any , if it does , most likely the bearing is bad in the basket ....... Also make sure the basket is not worn , if it is worn it will have grooves like shown below , if it does , the basket is toast ..... this does not mean that is the source of your noise , since we can't hear it , there is no way to say for sure what the noise is , but either way , you will need to replace ALL the plates and disks .... maybe post a short video of the noise , and some pictures of the parts ....the more details , the easier it is to diagnose , you can order parts here , or anywhere online that ships to Canada , though the shipping time may be a bit , so if you can order local , it might be the quickest way to get the bike back up and running ....

Well I hope you find some tranny oil in there when you drain it or I don't hold out good things for the gearbox.

Probably need a flush out to get out the black stuff as well.

I think this is my only other option on my phone. If it doesn't work, ill wait till I get home. Hoping this link just takes you right to imgur. If you want, my username is Chessboxinn on imgur and maybe you can find the video and photos directly there.

    Thanks guys.

I can't copy the pictures , but basically when you click on a picture (in your account) that you uploaded , it will open up in another tab or box , then look for the link as shown in my post , and you should be able to get the pictures posted ....... again , not sure on phone as I have never tried posting from my phone as I do not get cell service where I live so I just use my PC for most everything

As far as the video goes , it sounds to me like either the bearing is toast , or the inner basket is wobbling when you release the lever , you need to grab the inner , then outer basket (not at once) and see if either wobbles , they should not move at all , also , pull the pushrod and see if it has any damage (under the center thrust washer) also make sure the trust bearings are not toast , roll them on the washer by hand and see if you feel any roughness/notching

    Here are the pics.

Pulled the plug this evening. Next to no oil, even after I rinsed it out with brake spray. My dad (mechanic) owns shop that the bike is in, says I should put everything back in, fill er with oil and start it just to see if she's completely messed up or if the noise and riding issues are from being dry or something else, deeper than plates. I'm ordering a clutch pack regardless. Couldn't do too much damage, could it?

Also, I wiggled the inner and outers. Outer seems to have a bit of shake. Hard to tell.

I want to get my clutch pack from this site but I am curious of wait times. I've been waiting for banshee parts for several weeks now from another site. and another. Trying to ride this bike before end of season haha

Yea , the whole clutch setup seems to be pretty hammered , it looks like it got hot , so ..... no telling , yea you can put oil in it and try , if anything , that will allow some oil circulation and you can flush everything out ...... however , I am leaning towards the noise will still be there , as bad as it sounded , I am guessing it will need a few parts before anything sounds better , I am guessing , Outer Basket , Hub Bearing , Plates , Disks , Springs ... and to be honest , the center hub looks toast as well , my 02 clutch does not look that bad and it is original ... so you got a lot going on there ..... I guess you can piece it together till you stop the noise , or just replace it all , even some used parts might be a better option than what you have , if your budget is tight ..... just look the parts over carefully , and if they look like yours , then pass .......

As far as shipping , unfortunately , everyone I have encountered is having shipping delays ... sometimes it is a few days late , sometimes a week or more .... There is no way of guaranteeing any specific date for receiving a item , regardless where you get it ..... so it is kind of a crapshoot , sometimes you get things when you expect it , sometimes , not so much ..... I have ordered several parts from Rocky Mountain ATV , and got part of my order on time , the rest took 2 weeks , my buddy I track ride with , has had the same issue , he ordered tires , tubes and and all said they were "In Stock" , he got the tires , but no tubes , tubes came a week later , no reason why , it is just how it is right now .... and ANYTHING , I have ordered out of California , for whatever reason , sits there for 5 -7 days , then starts moving , I have no clue why , but I get Tracking , I get Item has shipped , then nothing for days , then it goes about 20 miles and sits for a few days , I have ordered stuff from Chicago and L.A. on the same day and around the same time of day , I get the stuff from Chicago in 4 days , I get the stuff from L.A. in 10 days , and L.A. is 1/4 the distance from me as Chicago is .... go figure :?

If you want to get it from here , just PM Ken , and ask him when he thinks it will ship and how long it usually takes .....

PM Ken here https://www.crfsonly.com/forum/memberli ... rofile&u=3 Just click where it says "PM: Send Private Message"

Thanks man. I'm going to try it for at least flushing the gearbox better as you said. I'll order a new clutch pack and try that first, I'd love to buy the Hinson racing kit that comes with the whole clutch but then i wouldn't even get the hub bearing would I? And I'm not made of money lol.

I will pm Ken, thanks again
