Master link for stock 250L chain?

    by wild.coast » Thu May 07, 2020 11:48 pm

Sorry if this is a dumb question, just recently got my first moto (CRF250L), so all of this stuff is new to me!

Tried to put together my trail repair kit, and thinking I should carry 1-2 extra links - I've tried to search this forum and the web for an answer but can't seem to find anything. What type/model of master link do I need?

From what I can tell, the stock chain on my bike is a DID 520 o-ring chain. The CRFsOnly shop sells a few master links, but the description for each seems to say they are specific for a certain model of chain, and I have no idea what's stock on my bike.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

The stock chain I believe is a Renthal , as that is generally what Honda uses but it could be a DID , but just because it is a Renthal or DID does not mean it will fit , as they make different widths , etc. , what I would do is take the chain itself (if there is no link then you need a chain breaker) and/or the stock link to your local bike shop or Honda dealer , larger dealers usually have chains and chain links in stock , you can then match the link to your link , or the new link to your chain ...... that would be the best bet .....

Only other option is to buy a "new" chain , and order a extra link or 2 for it ......unfortunately , with chains , they are usually different , I have 5 or 6 chains laying around , and each one of them requires a different link (I can't swap links between them) and most of them are DID ...........

So you may end up having to just replace it , so you can achieve what you want ...... I also carry extra links , I buy 120 link chains and 2 links , that way , if I want to change gearing or the wheelbase (changing wheelbase by putting the wheel all the way forward or all the way back allows handling characteristic changes like more/less cornering or more/less traction) , I can use the leftover piece of chain , and the extra link , cut it to the link number I need and add the link with the larger sprocket ..........
