I just ran into a guy who had a GPS. I have been wanting one for a while but have not really dugg into it much due to the cost.

The guy I spoke with had the Garmin 60cs and it was everything I wanted, I think. He had it hard wirded to his bike and mounted with a trick aluminumn bracket(really nice setup). the screen displayed a map like you would see from, say Mappoint and mention you can download your maps as well.

I am wondering $4$ is this the best unit and when hard wiring is our electrical capable of sustaining the additional load?

Also if Ken is wachting (A.K.A. big brother ha ha) could maps be downloaded then shared in a forum such as this if we where to suggest a specific forum for such a thing? Huh?!! To wild and crazy! or just crazy enough it may work?

RE: the latter if I am not as savy asI think I am PLEASE do not tell me it may crush me.

Wow! I think you are on to something. 100% yes and 0% No. :D

Things may change after the second vote. :?

The wife and I have become dependant on a GPS for on-road use. Would like to find something that could take the off-road abuse.

Ram Products and Tour-Tech make great mounts for cycle mounted gadgets.

we are a garmin dealer...and i'm working on being able to offer RAM mounts.

i'm not a gps guru and so i have a ton to learn in this area. if you can save ride data it would be great to have a way to share it. i would definitely be willing to look into what i could do to provide a way to upload and download this data.

now, if there is someone who can tell us if these gps systems can save off a trek that can be uploaded to another gps system and be used to "lead" someone on that same ride?

So I carry my GPS with me where ever I go. I have enough tracks to cover about 500 miles worth of trails in Idaho and Oregon.

The big problem will be a compatible file format. I like to use National Geographic's Topo! software, but it uses a vendor unique file format.

We could save our tracks as ASCII way point data, but that's a real pain.

Regardless, I like the idea and I have tons of track files to contribute!

    Ken,
I don't know about different versions today but a few years ago the person you were sharing track logs with had to be running the same version. That was both hardware and software. I would share routes with a riding buddy until I downloaded a update to my operating version. He in the meantime paid for a new mapping version. We were both using the same GPS. From then on we could no longer share routes.

With the newer GPS's that may not be the case. I have my eye on the new Garmin 60cxs for off-road use. It will be available by the end of the month.

Is there a place on your website that shows GPS products? If so I have not seen it and I think I have clicked everything that can be clicked.
