Is your idLe jet and fuel screw dialled in give even running. Sounds like running rich off idle.Try turning the fuel screw in a quarter of a turn. I assume the choke is fully off. See how that goes and let us know. The aircleaner is clean, not over oiled or water logged. Did it run ok previously?

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

If it is not a jetting issue as Aussie described for you - It could be an air leak ? That description fits the air leak characteristics. Just a thought for you.

Well - that does change things. Maybe still look for an air leak but other than that I'm out of my "old" school trouble shooting. I'm an old carb guy on all my bikes...and I like it that way. ;)
