    2006 CRF250R electrical issue

    by ab_714 » Sun Mar 27, 2016 2:06 pm

Hello all, I am having an issue with starting my 2006 CRF250R. It started first kick in October when I put it up for the winter; fast forward to this weekend and no start. I drained the fuel from the carb and tank in October after my last ride. It has a fresh air filter and I put a new spark plug in this weekend. Also I reshimmed the valves back to spec as the exhaust were a little out(~.002), intake was good. So I got brand new fuel, cleaned out the jets, air filter is also brand new. Bike won't kick start, it tried a time or two but wouldn't fire. Only thing I can think of is maybe it's getting a weak spark even though the plug is brand new. Any suggestions on where to start looking or other thoughts as too what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Check this first , make sure that the power wire is attached to the coil , sometimes when pulling the tank , the wire can get pulled off the connection by the fuel valve as it goes by , and it catches the power wire , it may look attached , and just be sitting there , or it can be completely off , no power to the coil , no spark , no start , or some power as its sitting there , but in the effort of kicking it , it breaks the connection , so it will try , but not run

Also , have you determined that your actually getting fuel to the plug ???

Turn your fuel valve on long enough so you know the carb is full , then remove the tank , then try to start the bike how you normally do , then pull the plug , it should have some gas wetness , if its completely dry , then your not getting fuel thru the carb , dip the tip of the plug in some gas , then re-install it and try to start it , if it tries to start or does for a brief minute , then fuel , or rather the lack of fuel is the issue , then check AP squirt , make sure it gives a good squirt , and just misses the slide , if squirt is good then your back to jets , or a internal blockage , or maybe even the float , or the needle/seat for the float stuck and not enough fuel in the bowl to be picked up , if the bowl has a drain screw on the bottom (flat screw facing left side at bottom of bowl just to the rear of the large nut at bottom) , loosen it and see if fuel comes out the drain tube , and see if fuel comes out for more than just a few seconds , or loosen the large nut at the bottom (don't completely remove it) and see if gas leaks out (put a rag under it to absorb the gas) , again , see if just a little , or a lot of gas comes out , if it looks to be enough to fill the bowl , then its not the issue

The bike needs Air , Fuel and Spark to run , so its one of those 3

    Jim,
it also needs compression or the fuel air mixture won't go bang, but without the first three you go nowhere.

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

Yes that's true , I was just focusing on what he had described which seemed to be a spark or fuel issue , since everything "seemed" to be described as working properly prior to sitting for the winter , so the obvious would be fuel/air , then spark , and since he said he adjusted valves , i would guess he would have some compression

But otherwise , you are correct !! ;)

It started first kick every time last year, that's what is confusing to me. Actually JimDirt you helped me last year when I had the bad gas issue after I put a new piston and cylinder on. I pulled the plug after trying to start and it had a wet look to it, not completely soaked but a wet look. And I get plenty of fuel out of the carb drain so I would assume that its it a fuel issue, that's why I started focusing on the electrical side. I will check out the coil power wire and see what I find there. I have also read about the wires in the spark plug boot coming loose from taking it on and off? May as well check that out while I have the tank off.
Thanks for the responses guys I appreciate the help and knowledge!
